Archived VideoMENOMONIE (May 3, 2014) - The power hitting of UW-Stevens Point was on full display as the UW-Stout baseball team dropped both games of an afternoon doubleheader with the Pointers. With a strong wind blowing straight out at Nelson Field, the two teams combined to hit 11 home runs on the day. Despite big afternoons from
Brady Burzynski (So, Eau Claire) and
Ryan Freitag (Sr, Osseo), the Blue Devils fell 11-6 and 18-6.
Freitag finished 3-6 on the afternoon, including a home run and four RBI while Burzynski went 3-7 with a home run and four runs scored.
Charlie Pelzer (Sr, Little Canada, Minn.) also had a strong day at the plate, going 4-8 and scoring a pair of runs.
In game one, the Pointers (26-9, 12-8 WIAC) got on the board quickly with a home run by Kyle McHugh in the top of the first. Stout (20-17, 10-12 WIAC) tied things up in the third, when Burzynski doubled with one out and moved over to third on a
Nick Nalbach (Fr, Plover) fly out before coming in to score on a Freitag double to left.
Stout would score a run in each of the next two inning as well, but three-run outbursts by the Pointers in the fifth and sixth innings put the Blue Devils in a 7-3 hole. A three-run homer by
Charlie Meyer (Jr, Janesville) cut the lead to 7-6 after seven innings before four Pointer runs in the top of the eighth put the game out of reach.
The top of the first in game two played out almost exactly the same as game one, with McHugh hitting a solo homer with two outs in the first to stake the Pointers to a 1-0 lead. But this time, Burzynski answered, leading of the bottom of the inning with a homer of his own to right field.
However, Stevens Point continued to roll, scoring three runs in each the second and third innings with the help of two more home runs, including McHughes third dinger of the day.
Trailing 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, Pelzer got Stout started, leading off with a base hit.
Brett Vavra (Jr, Chippewa Falls) followed with a single of his own and the Blue Devils loaded the bases when catcher
Jared Francois (Sr, Burlington) reached on an error.
Jack Schneider (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn.) drove the first run across on a fielders choice. After Burzynski was hit by a pitch, another error on a sharply hit Nalbach ground ball plated two more for Stout, making the score 7-4.
But the Pointers werent finished yet, scoring five more in the top of the seventh. Freitag answered in the eighth with a two-run home run, his 12th of the season to cut the lead to 13-6, but five more Stevens Point runs in the top of the ninth effectively ended Stout's chances.
The Blue Devils will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday May 4, in another double header with the Pointers. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
