Live Video vs. UW-Stevens Point, Day TwoTHIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (19-14, 9-9 WIAC) will close out the regular season with three home dates. Stout is scheduled to entertain UW-Superior (16-13, 7-9 WIAC), Friday, May 2 at 1 p.m., and UW-Stevens Point (22-9, 10-8 WIAC), Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4. The Blue Devils are seeking a WIAC tournament playoff bid, and are currently fourth in the WIAC. The top four teams advance.
THE 2014 BLUE DEVILS: UW-Stout opened the season 1-3 before winning seven games in a row on their spring trip. Stout finished up their trip with a 4-4 tie against the Minnesota Twins rookie team. The Blue Devils are 9-9 in conference play and have gone 2-2 in non-conference play. The Blue Devils are coming off of a split with conference leading UW-Whitewater. Stout has won seven more games then last season with six more games remaining on the schedule. |
2014 StatisticsPITCHING STAFF: Senior
Brent Mueller (6-2 W-L, 3.72 ERA, 48.1 IP, 43 K) and freshman
Zach Carlson (3-2 W-L, 3.65 ERA, 49.1 IP, 23 K) lead Stout in starts with seven each.
Patrick Gullickson (2-1 W-L, 3.66 ERA, 32.0 IP 22 K), and
Hayden Bowe (2-2 W-L, 5.58 ERA, 30.2 IP, 14 K) each made their third start of the season against Whitewater. Bowe is tied for the team lead in appearances with ten.
Andy Peterson also has ten appearances and has collected four saves to lead Stout.
HITTING THE BALL: Ryan Freitag tops the Blue Devils in most power numbers. He is batting .345, slugging .709 and has collected seven doubles, 11 home runs and 37 runs batted in.
Jack Schneider leads the team in batting average .360, from mostly the ninth spot, hitting a team-high 14 doubles and has 12 RBI. Schneider needs just two more doubles to tie the single season record.
Brady Burzynski, the lead-off hitter, is hitting .336 with two home runs, nine doubles, two triples, 23 RBI and a team-high 13 stolen bases.
Charlie Pelzer is hitting .330 and
Charlie Meyer is hitting .333, with Pelzer going 34-103 with seven doubles, a home run and 21 RBI. Meyer is 38-114 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 29 RBI. Meyer is among the national leaders in sacrifice flies with eight. As a team, Stout is among the top five nationally in sacrifice flies with 31. Pelzer, Freitag and Burzynski each have four sac flies. All eight starting position players have recorded at least 10 RBI.
Brett Vavra is hitting .305 (32-105) with 19 RBI.
Jared Francois is hitting .287 with eight doubles, two home runs and 20 RBI.
Jake Lunow is hitting .277 with four doubles, a triple, 13 RBI and two stolen bases Nich Nalbach (.268, 30-112) has five sacrifice hits. As a team, Stout is hitting .308.
UW-SUPERIOR BASEBALL: The Yellowjackets and Blue Devils are battling each other for one of the final WIAC playoff spots. Superior is led offensively by WIAC player of the year candidate Tom Fairbanks. Fairbanks is hitting .467, which is good for third in the conference. Fairbanks leads all WIAC hitters with 13 homeruns. The Yellowjackets have four other regular starters who are hitting over .300. Matt Vold is hitting .352, Wyatt Soderquist is hitting .322, Sam Holden is hitting .314 and Alex Quinones is hitting .306. Superior is hitting .310 as a team for the season. Superior is currently second amongst WIAC teams in on base percentage at .425. Travis Elwood has been Superior's most consistent performer on the mound. He is 4-2, and leads the team with a 3.38 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .251 against him. |
2014 Yellowjackets StatisticsLAST TIME THEY MET: Stout and Superior met on April, 9, splitting the two games. The Yellowjackets won game one 18-14 before Stout came back to win game two 8-6. The games were played in Mauston due to unplayable field conditions in Menomonie. |
Day One Games and StatisticsUW-STEVENS POINT BASEBALL: The Pointers are currently ranked number 15 in the D3baseball.com top 25. Stevens Point currently sits one game ahead of Stout in the WIAC standings. Brandon Kranz leads the Pointers in batting average at .430. He is second on the team in RBI's with 31 and third in slugging percentage at .533. Stevens point has five other starters hitting over .300. Kyle McHugh (.380), Bobby Gregorich (.360), Taylor Carlson (.321), Jimmy Coady (.304) and Riley Spetz (.301) are the other Pointers hitting over .300. Luke Watson has been Stevens Point's most consistent starting pitcher this year. Watson is 5-1 with a 1.57 ERA, which is best amongst their starting pitchers. Opponents are hitting just .191 against him. JP Feyereisen and Cam Seidl have both started seven games for Stevens Point. Opponents are hitting just .180 against Feyereisen. The Pointers' 3.54 team ERA is tops amongst WIAC teams.

COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, (48-63, as of April 30, 2014) son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, is in his third season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 12-27 record in 2013, a mark the Blue Devils exceeded halfway through this season. In the fall, 2013, Gardenhire played for Germany in the World Baseball Classic.
Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005.DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will close the regular season when they host UW-Superior, Friday, May 2 at 1 p.m., then will host UW-Stevens Point, May 3-4, in the final regular season finale.
