UW-Stout 8, UW-Platteville 7PLATTEVILLE (April 6, 2014) -
Ryan Freitag hit two home runs and
Brent Mueller went the distance in a 15-strikeout effort for an 8-2 opening game win and UW-Stout used a four-run fifth inning to take an 8-7 second game win to earn a sweep over UW-Platteville Sunday at Kendall Murray Field.
After drawing seven total walks against the Pioneers on Saturday, Freitag unleashed his bat in the opener, hitting a two-run home run in the third inning, then followed that up with a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. Freitag still drew two walks and was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Mueller was in control from start to finish, getting at least one strikeout in each inning and had two innings with three strikeouts. He ened the game with a strikeout. Mueller scattered nine hits and both runs were earned. Mueller is the only Blue Devils to pitch a complete game this season and has two.
In the second game, Stout (11-6, 3-3 WIAC) broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth inning.
Brady Burzynski drove in two runs in the inning with a double, and
Charlie Meyer doubled in a run as Stout took a 6-2 lead.
The Pioneers (5-13, 2-4 WIAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 6-4. Stout took a n 8-4 lead in the sixth. The Pioneers added two runs in the seventh and a single run in the ninth.
Andy Peterson worked the final three innings to get the save, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.
Zach Carlson went six innings for the win, strking out six.
Brady Burzynski was 2-for-4 with three RBI and
Jack Schneider was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 9 at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, then will host Maranatha Baptist University, Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m. Stout will be at the University of St. Thomas, Saturday, April 12.
