PLATTEVILLE (April 5, 2014) - UW-Platteville scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain a split with UW-Stout Saturday at Kendall Murray Field. The Blue Devils won the first game, a nearly four hour slugfest, 16-10, where Stout clubbed out 16 hits and Platteville 13..
With the score tied at 3-3 in the nightcap, the Pioneers' Casey Schroeder drove in Zach Iverson, who had led off the inning with a double. Moments later, Zach Demmon cleared the bases with a two-run home run to center field.
Stout threatened in the top of the ninth.
Nick Nalbach (Fr, Plover) reached on a one-out single.
Ryan Freitag drew a walk - his seventh of the afternoon - and
Charlie Meyer moved the duo to second and third on a ground out, the first of two consecutive ground outs to end the game.
In contratst to the first game, Stout jumped into the lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and an additional run in the second.
Brady Burzynski (So, Eau Claire) scored on a wild pitch and Meyer hit a sacrifice fly for the two runs in the first inning, and
Jake Lunow (Jr, Princeton) drove in a run in the third.
That would be the end of the scoring on the day for the Blue Devils. Platteville scored two in the third when Schroeder doubled down the third base line and then tied the score in the fourth on another RBI by Schroeder, who would finsih the game at 4-for-5 with four RBI.Nalbach was 3-for-5 for Stout and Burzynski was 2-for-5.
Adam Widder took the loss for Stout in relief.
The teams slugged the ball around in the first game to the tune of 29 hits and 26 runs. The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each the first and second innings.
Stout went on a scoring rampage, scoring in the next three innings, starting off when
Brett Vavra drove in a pair of runs in the third. Stout doubled that with a four-run fourth inning, aided by two Platteville errors.
Charlie Meyer brought in a run with a sacrifice fly and
Charlie Pelzer singled in a run and Stout had a 6-4 lead.
The Pioneers got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Stout broke out to a 13-5 lead with a seven run fifth inning, sending 10 to the plate.
Jack Schneider, who would go 4-for-4 in the game, drove in the first run of the inning with a double to center field.
Ryan Freitag drew a bases loaded walk. Meyer drove in two runs with a left field double. Freitag scored on a wild pitch, Vavra hit a sacrifice fly – Stout would have four sacfrice flies in the game - and
Jared Francois scored on a throwing error.
Platteville rebounded for three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to make it 13-10. Stout answered with a three-run ninth. JAcob Edstrom scored on a wild pitch and
Wyatt Ernstmeyer and
Brady Burzynski each had a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers loaded the bases in the bottom of the nihth, but came up empty.
Burzyniski, Meyer, Francois, Pelzer and
Jake Lunow each had two hits, along with Schneider's four. Meyer and Vavra each had three RBI.
Patrick Gullickson picked up his first collegiate win, coming on in relief in the second inning, pitching 4.2 innings, scattering six hits, allowing four earned runs. Gullickson struck out five, with four Stout pitchers combining for nine strikeouts.
Casey Schroeder, Zach Demmon, and Tyler Trautsch each had three hits for the Pioneers. Trautsch had four RBI, including a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Four Platteville pitchers combined for nine strikeouts.
The two teams are slated to play again Sunday, April 6 with the first game set to start at noon.
