UW-Stout 2, UW-Whitewater 1WHITEWATER (April 27, 2014) - UW-Stout scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 2-1 decision over UW-Whitewater Sunday, earning a split for the day and a split in the series. The Warhawks won the opener, 7-4.
Ryan Freitag (Jr, Osseo) hit a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth to tie the game.
Kasey Kruse (Jr, Menomonie), who had reached when he was hit by a pitch,then advanced to second on a passed ball, scored what would be the winning run when pinch hitter
Charlie Meyer (Jr, Janesville) reached on an error.
Kellen Pearson (So, Hudson) recorded the win, pitching the final three innings, allowing only one hit. Pearson stranded a Warhawk runner at third in bottom of the ninth to get his second win of the season.
Patrick Gullickson (So, Chanhassen, Minn) started the game, scattering four hits, striking out six and allowing one run, that coming in the thir inning.
Freitag was 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils (19-14,9-9 WIAC).
In the opener, the Warhawks scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.
The Blue Devils got on the board in the sixth inning when
Jake Lunow (Jr, Princeton) drove in
Brett Vavra (Jr, Chippewa Falls), who had reached on an error. The Warhawks (25-6,13-4 WIAC) answered back with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the inning. Adam Gregory had an RBI single and Nick Kuhlman had a two-run single.
Stout pulled to within the final score with three runs in the seventh inning.
Charlie Pelzer (Sr, Little Canada, Minn) and Vavra recorded RBI singles and
Jared Francois (Sr, Burlington) drove in a run with a groundout.
The Warhawks' Brock Liston recorded the win on the hill, notching eight strikeouts.
Stout is scheduled to host UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m., then will host UW-Stevens Point, May 3-4 to close out the regular season.
