MENOMONIE ( April 22, 2014) - Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn.) went the distance in both games as the Blue Devils came away with a pair of victories against the Falcons of UW-River Falls. In her 14 innings pitched on the day, Workman gave up 0 runs.
In game one, Workman tied Jenni Bostrom (2001) and Kristy Hoffman (2007-10) for the school record for most strikeouts in a single game, fanning 12 Falcons on the way to a 3-0 victory. Workman scattered four hits and didnt allow any walks.
The Blue Devils (22-10, 9-1 WIAC) jumped ahead right away, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the first, a
Taylor Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn.) single brought home
Lynzi Knudtson (Jr, Melrose) from second for Stout's first run. Her sister Tori followed with a double to center, bringing Taylor around to score, staking the Blue Devils to a 2-0 lead.
Stout would add another run in the bottom of the second when Jess Behnke (Sr, Bruce) scored from second when the River Falls (15-20, 2-10 WIAC) left fielder bobbled Knudtson's single.
River Falls would threaten in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs on a passed ball strikeout and a pair of singles, but Workman was able to get Sarah Sorenson to pop out to end the inning.
In game two, the Blue Devils got out to an early lead again, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Taylor Workman got it started, reaching on an error. With
Kim Jablonski (Fr, Watertown) pinch-running,
Tori Workman attempted a sacrifice bunt to move her over, but managed to pop it over the charging first baseman for a base hit. Two batters later,
Hannah Sweet (Sr, Elk River, Minn.) ripped a double to center, bringing both around to score.
Stout would add two more with two outs in the third. After a Knudtson walk, catcher
Sam Hastings (Sr, Waukesha) moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, but it proved to be moot, as
Taylor Workman followed with a monster blast to left center, clearing the fence for a two-run homer to put the Blue Devils up 4-0.
In the fifth, River Falls got on the board with a single followed by back-to-back doubles, bringing them within two runs, 4-2. That would be as close as they would get, as Workman shut them down the rest of the way to secure the win for the Blue Devils. Workman scattered two hits and three walks while striking out four.
Up next, the Blue Devils will be at conference-leading UW-Oshkosh on Thursday, April 24 for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to start at 2 p.m. Stout will return home for a pair of weekend doubleheaders, against UW-La Crosse on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. and against UW-Platteville on Sunday, April 27 at noon.
