Baseball Preview: Blue Devils will host Eagles Tuesday in doubleheader

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (17-10, 7-5 WIAC) will host UW-La Crosse (11-12, 5-6 WIAC), Tuesday, April 22, then will be at UW-Whitewater (21-4, 9-2 WIAC), Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27. With half the WIAC schedule behind the, the Blue Devils will enter Tuesday's game with La Crosse in a tie with UW-Superior for second place in the WIAC. The Blue Devils are coming off a four-game series where they took three of four from UW-Oshkosh, April 17-18. UW-La Crosse had a non-conference doubleheader Monday at St. Olaf. The Eagles lost three to UW-Whitewater last weekend, and one game was canceled due to weather condititions. The Eagles were also forced to postponed a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary's University, April 15.  The two teams opened WIAC season against each other on April 1 in Mauston, with the Eagles sweeping the doubleheader, 16-6, 7-3, on a cold, blustery day.

THE 2014 BLUE DEVILS: UW-Stout opened the season 1-3 before winning seven games in a row on their spring trip.  Stout finished up their trip with a 4-4 tie against the Minnesota Twins rookie team.  The Blue Devils have opened conference play with a 7-5 record, and have gone 2-2 in non-conference play. The Blue Devils have won eight of their last 12 games. Stout has surpassed their win total from last season with 12 games remaining on the schedule.  |  2014 Statistics

PITCHING STAFF:  Senior Brent Mueller (5-2 W-L, 4.58 ERA, 39.1 IP, 37 K) and freshman Zach Carlson (3-2 W-L, 3.70 ERA, 41.1 IP, 21 K) lead Stout in starts with seven each. Patrick Gullickson (2-0 W-L, 2.49 ERA, 21.2 IP 16 K), and Hayden Bowe (2-0 W-L, 2.18 ERA, 20.2 IP, 12 K) each made their first start of the season last week. Bowe leads the team in appearances with eight.  Andy Peterson leads the team in appearances with nine and has also collected four saves to lead Stout.        

HITTING THE BALL: Ryan Freitag tops the Blue Devils in average (.360, 31-86) and power (.733 slugging percentage) with five doubles, nine home runs and 33 runs batted in. Jack Schneider is hitting .359 (28-78) from mostly the ninth spot, hitting a team-high 11 doubles and has 11 RBI. Brady Burzynski, the lead-off hitter, is hitting .340 (35-103) with eight doubles, three triples, 18 RBI and a team-high 11 stolen bases. Charlie Pelzer and Charlie Meyer are each hitting .337 , with Pelzer going 28-83with six doubles, a home run and 19 RBI. Meyer is 31-92 with eight doubles, two triples, three home runs and a team-best 24 RBI.  Meyer is among the national leaders in sacrifice flies with eight. As a team, Stout is among the top five nationally in sacrifice flies with 30. Pelzer and Burzynski each have four sac flies. All eight starting position players have recorded at least 10 RBI. Brett Vavra ishitting .325 (27-83) with a team-best nine doubles and 18 RBI. Jared Francois is hitting .320 (24-75) with seven doubles, two homes runs and 18 RBI. Jake Lunow jumped his average to more than .300 this season after hitting 7-14 against the Titans. Lunow is hitting .313 (25-80) with four doubles, a triple, 12 RBI, two stolen bases and a team-high five sacrifice hits.  Nich Nalbach (.264, 24-91) has four sacrifice hits. as a team, Stout is hitting .318.

UW-LA CROSSE BASEBALL:  Prior to Monday's game at St. Olaf, the Eagles had three batters hitting over .400 and six hitting over .300. Taylor Kohlwey is leading hthe way at .468 (44-94) with 15 RBI on nine doubles, three triples and a teamphigh four home runs. Cole Cefalu is hitting .466 (41-88) with 22 RBI on seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 11 stolen bases. Alex Cordova is the team's RBI leader with 32 and is hitting .402 (39-97) with eight doubles and a team-high four triples. Shane Adler (2-1 W-L, 6.23 ERA, 21.2 IP, 11 K) and Ben Cejka (3-2 W-L, 4.71 ERA, 42.0 IP, 36 K), who started against the Blue Devils on April 1, have each started five games. Cejka has thrown three complete games. Joe Miller (0-3 W-L, 4.39 ERA, 26.2 IP, 18 K) has gotten the call four times, and Troy Kenkel (2-1 W-L, 3.86 ERA, 23.1 IP, 15 K) and Jake Stern (1-1 W-L, 5.82 ERA, 17.0 IP, 9 K) three times. |  2014 Eagles Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: With the temperatures in the mid-30s and the winds whipping around 25 miles an hour, it was not a pleasant day for baseball. The weather didn't do UW-Stout any favors as the Blue Devils dropped their conference openers, 16-6, 7-3, to UW-La Crosse April 1 at the Woodside Sports Complex. UW-WHITEWATER BASEBALL:  UW-Whitewater, the defending regular-season champion, is slotted for second in the seven-team league race and entered the 2014 campaign ranked No. 15 by D3baseball.com. The Warhawks are currently in first place in the WIAC.  The Warhawks have collected 14 conference regular-season crowns, three tournament championships and made six straight NCAA appearances.  The 2013 team ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III with 36 home runs and fifth with a .341 batting average.  Senior Jared Fon claimed WIAC Position Player of the Year accolades in 2012, and was second on the team a season ago with 62 hits and 44 runs scored.  Senior Scott Plaza led the 2013 pitching staff with a 2.60 earned run average in 52.0 innings pitched.  Gone from last year's squad is Marty Herum, the reigning two-time WIAC Position Player of the Year.  Head coach John Vodenlich needs 13 wins to reach 400 in his career. | 2014 Warhawk Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: The games were supposed to be in Menomonie, but were moved to Whitewater when the winter that would never leave was still in full swing in Menomonie, April 20-21, 2013. COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, (46-59, as of April 21, 2014) son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, is in his third season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 12-27 record in 2013, a mark the Blue Devils exceeded halfway through this season.  In the fall, 2013, Gardenhire played for Germany in the World Baseball Classic.  Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005.

DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will close the regular season when they host UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m., then will host UW-Stevens Point, May 3-4, in the final regular season finale.
