MENOMONIE (April 17, 2014) -
Hayden Bowe (Fr, Eau Claire) and
Patrick Gullickson (So, Chanhassen, Minn) pitched complete games and tossed UW-Stout to a first day sweep over UW-Oshkosh Thursday at Nelson Field. Bowe took a 10-0 seven inning win, while Gullickson went nine complete innings for a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Bowe made his first collegiate start after working the first part of the season out of the bullpen, and Gullickson notched his first collegiate complete game. Bowe scattered four hits and struck out five, while Gullickson scattered six hits and struck out six. Gullickson, Gullickson got touched for two runs, only one earned, for the only Oshkosh (12-10, 5-7 WIAC) runs of the day. The Titans had been averaging nearly seven runs per outing.
While Bowe and Gullickson were doing their work, the Blue Devil (16-9, 6-4 WIAC) offense got to work early.
In the opener,
Ryan Freitag (Jr, Osseo) hit a two run home run in the first inning to give Stout a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils doubled the score on
Brett Vavra 's (Jr, Chippewa Falls) two-run home run in the fourth inning. Stout added two more runs on
Charlie Pelzer 's (Sr, Little Canada, Minn) RBI double and
Jake Lunow 's (Jr, Princeton) RBI single in the fifth.
Jared Francois (Sr, Burlington) smashed a bases loaded three-run double in the sixth inning to make it 9-0 and
Brady Burzynski (So, Eau Claire) singled in
Jack Schneider (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn), who hit a one out triple in the seventh to make it 10-0 and end the game at the end of the inning on the mercy rule.
Stout's offense took a little while to find their groove in game two. Coming into the fifth inning, Stout had recorded only one hit. The Blue Devils exploded for a three-run, five hit effort. Vavra led off with a single, then advanced to second on outfield error. Lunow moved Vavra to third on a sacrifice bunt and Schneider scored Vavra with a single. Burzynski tripled in Schneider and Burzynski came home on a
Nick Nalbach (Fr, Plover) single.
The Titans put a run on the board inthe fifth inning when Zack Whalen scored on an error after a lead off double.
The Blue Devils put another three runs on the board in the seventh inning. Freitag hit his second two run home run of the day and Francois greeted a new Titan pitcher with an RBI single. The Titans scored in the bottom of the ninth when pinch hitter Skyler Bohn drove in a run. Gullickson stranded two runners to end the game.
Nalbach was 3-for-5 in the opener. Pelzer, Vavra and Lunow all had two hits in the first game for Stout. Whalen and Luke Gajewski had two hits for the Titans.
Nalbach was 2-for-5 in the second game, to finish at 5-for-10 on the day. Vavra was 2-for-3 to finish at 4-for-7.
Charlie Meyer (Jr, Janesville) had two hits in the second game. Stout finished with 13 hits in the first game and 11 hits in the second.
The two teams will face off again Friday, April 18 at Nelson Field, beginning at noon. The games were scheduled to be held In Oshkosh, but rain and snow last weekend made the Oshkosh field unplayable.
