Blue Devils build leads in both games, but get swept by St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. (April 12, 2014) - UW-Stout was able to build leads in both games, but both times 20th ranked St. Thomas came back to hand the Blue Devils a pair of losses Saturday at Koch Diamond. The Tommies took 9-4, 10-7 decsions.

In the opener, the Blue Devils (14-9) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Charlie Pelzer and Jack Schneider drove in runs. The Tommies (17-5) answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Stout took a 4-2 lead on Brady Burzynski's two run double in the fourth inning. The Tommies answered again, this time with four runs in the bottom of the stanza to take a 6-4 lead. Stout would not score again. The Tommies tacked on two runs in the fifth and a solo run in the sixth.

In the second game, Stout got out to a 6-1 lead after two innings by scoring three runs in the first and three runs in the second. Ryan Freitag singled in a run, Charlie Meyer hit a sacrifice fly and Kasey Kruse scored on a throwing error in the first.

Following a single run by the Tommies in the bottom half of the inning, Stout put up three runs in the top of the second for a 6-1 lead. Freitag drew a bases loaded walk and Jared Francois drove in two runs with a single to left field.

St. Thomas chipped away at the lead, tallying three runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and took the lead, 7-6, with two runs in the fifth.

Stout tied the score. Burzynski led off with a single, then was moved to second on Kruse's sacrifice bunt. Burzynski stole third and came home on Freitag's sacrifice fly. The Tommies took over with three runs in the sixth inning.

Freitag had three RBI in the game, while Francois drove in two.

Stout will return to conference acton this week when they are at UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18.
