Photo GalleryMENOMONIE (April 11, 2014) - In their first games back at Nelson Field in almost two years, UW-Stout captured a pair of non-conference games over Maranatha Baptist University. One was relatively stress free for the Blue Devils, an 11-0 opening game win, but the second produced some drama as the Blue Devils completed the sweep, 7-3, Friday.
In the opener, Stout scored three runs in the first inning and added five runs in the second inning.
Ryan Freitag got thngs rolling for the Blue Devils, taking the first pitch he saw and sending over the center field fence for a two-run blast.
Charlie Pelzer added a ground out RBI.
In the second inning, Stout (14-7) got RBIs from Freitag,
Brady Burzynski,
Charlie Meyer,
Jared Francois,and
Brett Vavra. Stout added three more in the sxith innings. Francois drove in a pari of runs and
Jake Lunow had a sacrifice fly.
Kellen Pearson made his first appearance of the season, allowed two hits and strike out three to get the win.
Matt Flesher came on to pitch two innings and struck out four and allowed one hit.
Freitag, Meyer, Francois and Casey Kruse all went 3-for-4. Freitag and Francois finished with three RIB.
The second game was a little more edge fo the seat after Stout scored five runs in the second inning, taking advantage of some Maranatha pitching woes. Francois scored on a wild pitch and
Jack Schneider scored on a passed ball. Schneider, Austin Littman and
Taran Tierney each drove in a run.
The Crusaders made things interesting in the top of the third, scoring three runs to pull to within 5-3. Cody Borland doubled in a pair of runs and Timothy Rogers plated another.
Maranatha left two runners on in both the fourth and fifth innings before Stout added two runs on
Noah Brown's single.
The Crusaders loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but
Andy Peterson came on to pick up his fourth save of the season, forcing a double play ball and a grounder to second base.
Schneider went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freitag was 2-for-4 while Littman was 2-for-3.
Ian Schiltz got the win, pitching three innings.
Stout will be at the University of St. Thomas, Saturday, April 12, then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18.
