Baseball Preview: Blue Devils to take on St. Thomas in St. Paul

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout finally got a home game in at Nelson Field on Friday, sweeping Maranatha Baptist University. The Blue Devils (14-7, 4-4 WIAC) return to the road Saturday, April 12 when they will travel to the University of St. Thomas.

THE 2014 BLUE DEVILS: UW-Stout opened the season 1-3 before winning seven games in a row on their spring trip.  Stout dropped a pair of WIAC games to UW-La Crosse, 16-6, 7-3, last week in the conference openers, then took three of four games at UW-Platteville over the weekend and split Wednesday with UW-Superior.  |  2014 Statistics

PITCHING STAFF: Brent Mueller has led the way for the Blue Devils on the mound.  He has started five times for Stout and his 3.07 ERA leads all pitchers who have thrown 10 innings or more for the Blue Devils.  Mueller, who had 15 strikeouts in his last outing, has collected a 4-1 record for the Blue Devils and teams are hitting just .239 against him.  Zach Carlson has also started five times for Stout.  He has a 3.54 ERA.  Patrick Gullickson, Andy Peterson and Hayden Bowe have led the way out of the bullpen.  Gullickson has a 3.09 ERA, and opponents are hitting just .209 against him. Gullickson earned his first collegiate save against UW-Superior.  Peterson leads the team in appearances with seven and has also collected three saves to lead Stout.  Hayden Bowe is second on the team in appearances out of the bullpen with six and earned his first collegiate win against Superior.         

HITTING THE BALL: Ryan Freitag, Brett Vavra, Charlie Meyer and Jack Schneider are all within a few percentage points of each other as far as batting average goes. Freitag is hitting .373 (22-59) with a team-best 23 RBI on four doubles and six home runs. His slugging percentage has moved up to .746 and he has attracted 20 walks. Vavra is hitting .370 (20-54) with eight doubles, and 15 RBI. Meyer is hitting .369 (24-65) with 22 RBI, seven doubles, a triple and three home runs. Meyer also has seven sacrifice flies. Schneder is hitting .365 (19-52), and matched Vavra with eight doubles. Brady Burzynski (24-72) and Charlie Pelzer (19-57) both batting .333. Jake Lunow is hitting .303 (17-56). Burzynski is 6-6 on stolen bases for the season and Schneder is 3-for-3 on thefts.    Against the Yellowjackets, the Blue Devils gave up seven runs in the first inning, but got eight back in the third inning before falling 18-14 in game one. Stout battled back in the second game, spotting Superior three first inning runs before going on to an 8-6 second game win.. Freitag was 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBI and launched a two-run tape measure home run. Pelzer, Lunow and Jared Francois all had two hits in the gme. Pelzer hit his first home run of the season. 

MARANATHA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY:  The Crusaders grabbed two big wins over Lincoln Christian Universty April 7, winning 22-1, 13-3, but then were tripped up by Wisconsin Lutheran, 12-2, 11-1, April 5. .In the first game against Lincoln, Maranatha put the game away early with a 12 run second inning. In the second game, Maranatha scored in every inning to end the game in five innings.  They are led offensively by Micah Burdett, who is hitting .382 for the season.  Freshman Adam Courtney leads Maranatha on the mound with a .375 ERA.    | 2014 Maranatha Statistics

LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET: The teams have never met.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS:  The Tommies have one of the storied programs of Division III baseball and are always a part of the national conversation.  They are led offensively by Ben Podobinski who is hitting .467 and is 13-14 on stolen bases.  Tim Kuzniar (.451) and Tyler Peterson (.449) are also hitting over .400 for the Tommies.  St. Thomas is led on the mound by Zach Franz, Eric Veglahn and Jared Dehmer.  All three have ERA's under 2.2 with Franz leading the three at 1.54.   | 2014 Tommie Statistics

LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET: The teams have not played since March 11, 2007, when they split, with Stout winning the first game, 3-2, but St. Thomas coming for a 4-3 second game win.

COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, is in his third season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 12-27 record in 2013.  In the fall, 2013, Gardenhire played for Germany in the World Baseball Classic.  Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005.

DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will be at UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18.

UW-SUPERIOR: Nick Bursik begins his first season in charge of the Yellowjackets following the departure of Eddy Morgan - the program's all-time wins leader.  Bursik was an assistant for the program last year and played for the Yellowjackets from 2009-12.  Senior Wyatt Soderquist finished fifth in the conference with 24 walks a season ago.  In 2013, UW-Superior did not play a single game at home due to poor weather conditions.  The Yellowjackets are led offensively by Tom Fairbanks.  Fairbanks is hitting .519 with eight triples and six homeruns.  Travis Elwood leads Superior on the mound.  He has a 2-1 record and has collected a 1.64 ERA.    | 2014 Yellowjacket Statistics

LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET: UW-Superior and UW-Stout played the Yellowjackets home series at UW-Whitewater, with the teams splitting the results each day. On May 4, 2013, Superior won the opener, 8-6, but Stout came back with a 7-5 win. On May 5, Stout won the first in a pitchers' dual, 1-0, but Superior captured the final game, 4-3. | Day 1 story | Day 2 story
