Archived VideoMAUSTON (April 1, 2014) - With the temperatures in the mid-30s and the winds whipping around 25 miles an hour, it was not a pleasant day for baseball. The weather didn't do UW-Stout any favors as the Blue Devils dropped their conference openers, 16-6, 7-3, to UW-La Crosse Tuesday at the Woodside Sports Complex.
The Eagles rapped out 17 hits in the opener and 18 hits in the nightcap.
In the first game, La Crosse (8-6, 2-0 WIAC) scored in little - and sometime - big chunks. The Eagles took a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second and two in the third before Stout (8-5, 0-2 WIAC) put up a threepence in the bottom of the third.
Charlie Pelzer (Sr, Little Canada) belted a two-run single and
Brett Vavra (Jr, Chippewa Falls) added an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Eagles put up five runs in the fifth, a single run in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the ninth. The Eagles had three players who collected two RBI and Joel Zyhowski had three.
Pelzer had a good game at the plate for the Blue Devils, going 2-for-3 with four RBI.
in the second game, the Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Stout cut the lead in half when Plelzer hit his second sacrifice fly of the series in the bottom of the second inning.
La Crosse added a run in the fourth inning on four hits but stranded two runners. The Eagles would leave 11 runners on base. Stout cut the lead to 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by
Charlie Meyer (Jr, Janesville) in the sixth.
La Crosee scored a run in the seventh, then added three runs in the eighth.
Stout got a run back when
Jared Francois (Sr, Burlington) hit his first home run of the season, a shot to left field in the eighth.
Brady Burzynski (So, Eau Claire) was 3-for-5 to lead Stout. La Crosses Taylor Kohlwey was 4-for-6 and Zyhowski was 4-for-5.
The games were supposed to be Stout's home openers, but Nelson Field was not ready from the winter season.
Stout is scheduled to be at UW -Platteville, Satuday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6
