Fort Meyers, Fla (March 19, 2014)- For the first time since 1997 UW-Stout will go home undefeated in their spring trip games. The Blue Devils got two strong pitching performances and four RBIs from
Ryan Freitag (Jr. Osseo) to run their winning streak to seven games.
Brent Mueller (Sr. Medford) started and finished game one on the mound for Stout. He went seven innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, to earn the first complete game of the year for the Blue Devils (8-3).
Stout started the scoring in game one when
Brett Vavra (Jr. Chippewa Falls) hit a two-out double and was driven in by a
Jake Lunow (Jr. Princeton) single. Lunow would advance to third on an error by the right fielder and score on a
Jack Schneider (Jr. Minneapolis, Minn.) single. Stout would score two more runs in the inning on a single by
Nick Nalbach (Fr, Plover). Stout would add another run in the third when
Charlie Pelzer (Sr. Little Canada, Minn.) reached on an error by the third baseman and was driven in when Vavra hit his second double of the game. Stout scored their sixth and final run of the game on a Freitag RBI single in the 6th inning. Southern Vermont scored both of their runs on a two out error in the sixth inning.
In game two Stout started the scoring in the first inning.
Brady Burzynski (So, Eau Claire) singled and was later driven in on a Freitag ground ball. In the fourth inning Freitag led off with a double and
Jared Francois (Sr. Burlington) followed with a single. Freitag scored on a Pelzer sacrafice fly and Francois was driven in by another Vavra double. The Blue Devils scored again in the fifth when Burzynski was driven in by a Meyer sacrafice fly. Stout would tack on three more runs in the seventh inning, two on a RBI single by Freitag and one on a sacrifice fly by Francois.
Zach Carlson (Fr. Lyons Township) started on the mound for Stout. He threw 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs and striking out five.
Andy Peterson (Fr. Stillwater, Minn.) came on for the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save for the Blue Devils. He gave up one hit and collected one strike out.
Stout will take on the Minnesota Twins rookie team in an exhibition game Thursday, March 20 at 12 p.m.
