FORT MEYERS, Fla (March 15, 2014) - Charlie Meyer (Jr. Janesville) went 5-6,
Brett Vavra (Jr. Chippewa Falls) collected five RBI and UW-Stout got good pitching to complete an 8-1, 10-1 sweep of Minnesota Morris on their opening day of the spring trip.Â
The Blue Devils got another strong start in game one from
Brent Mueller (Sr. Medford). Mueller threw four innings of no hit baseball. He allowed two walks but neither runner advanced past first base. Mueller earned the win thanks in part to good relief work from
Ian Schiltz (Sr. Franklin) and
Tyler Kinderman (So. Chippewa Falls).Â
The Blue Devils started the scoring early in game one, scoring four first inning runs.Â
Nick Nalbach (Fr. Plover) reached on an error and later scored the first run when
Charlie Pelzer (Sr. Little Canada, Minn.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.Â
Ryan Freitag (Jr. Osseo) followed Nalbach up with a single. Meyer then singled to set up the bases loaded situation. After Pelzer was hit by a pitch Vavra collected a two RBI single to finish the scoring for the inning.Â
Stout added two more runs in the second inning.Â
Jack Schneider (Jr. Minneapolis, Minn) led off the inning with a single.Â
Brady Burzynski (So, Chippewa Falls) hit a single and Nalbach knocked in Schneider with an RBI single. Burzynski would score on a Pelzer ground out to second base.Â
The Blue Devils would add on two more runs, one each in the third and sixth innings. In the third Vavra scored on a sac fly by Schneider. In the sixth Meyer would score on an RBI single by Pelzer.
Overall for the game Meyer was 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Vavra was 2-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.Â
In game two
Zach Carlson earned the win for Stout, throwing four innings and giving up one run.Â
Cole Wynveen (So, Stillwater, Minn.) and
Patrick Gullickson (So. Chanhassen, Minn.) threw three scoreless innings to seal the win for the Blue Devils.Â
Meyer continued his strong play from game one with a big game two. He started the scoring by doubling and later coming around Pelzer ground out. Vavra and
Jake Lunow (Jr. Princeton) were both hit by a pitch before scoring on a
Jack Schneider two RBI double. Meyer would later add a two run home run and a single.Â
Stout will be back in action tomorrow, March 16th. They will play a varsity reserve game at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by a nine inning game at 1 p.m. (ET)
