WBB Preview: Blue Devils make trip to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday

at UW-Stevens Point:  Live Stats | Live Video | Live Audio

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (3-5, 1-0 WIAC) will travel to UW-Stevens Point (4-4, 1-1 WIAC), Wednesday, Dec. 10 for a 7 p.m. contest. Stout will be off until resuming play at the DePauw University Tournament, Dec. 28-29.

WEBCASTS: All UW-Stout home games will be available in a live video stream by Blue Devil Video, with Sam Ripp on the call. WMEQ 880 Radio, with Pete Knutson, Jay Fahl, Jimmie Kaska or Jake Bostrom, will broadcast and provide a live audio stream of away conference games. Stout will provide Live Stats for all home games. UW-STOUT THIS SEASON: The Blue Devils come into the 2014-15 season with six seniors, the largest group of returning seniors in quite a few years. Jenna Goldsmith is leading the team in scoring with 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds. Kyleigh Hebert is averaging 8.9 points. Katelynne Folkers is leading Stout off the boards, averaging 7.3 caroms per contest, and is averaging 8.5 points. Brea Boomer is averaging 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds. STOUT LAST TIME OUT: Kyleigh Hebert scored what would prove to be the game-winning bucket with 17 seconds left, then stole the inbound pass to seal the win as time ran out to give Stout a 54-52 win over UW-La Crosse, Dec. 6, in the WIAC opener for the Blue Devils. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT:  The Pointers lost four starters from last season, but return 50.4 percent of its scoring and 60.0 percent of its rebounding from a year ago.  Sophomore Lauren Anklam is back after contributing 7.5 points per contest and adding a team-best 38 steals and 40 three-point field goals made. So far this yeaer, Anklam is averaging 6.5 points. Kaitlyn Jacobs is averaging 9.4 points and a team best 6.3 rebounds. She is also topping the Pointers in assists with just over two per game. Joann Wolfenberg is averaging 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds. The Pointers have had only two players start all eight games - Jacobs and Taylor Douglas. Allie Miceli, who mised the first three games of the season, is averaging a team-best 11.8 points and is second on the team in rebounds with 5.6. LAST TIME OUT:  Stevens Point  shot 50.0 percent in the second half but host UW-Superior held on for a 58-50 win over the Pointers Dec. 6 in Superior.  After trailing 25-10 at the half, the Pointers outscored Superior 40-33 in the second half thanks to making 15-of-30 shots from the field. Allie Miceli led Point with 16 points, one short of the career-high 17 she scored against the Yellowjackets on Jan. 11, 2014. The Yellowjackets led 42-23 with 10:00 left in the game before the Pointers scored eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 12 with 6:55 remaining. Later, a three-pointer by Lexi Roland  brought UWSP to within 10, 50-40, with 4:06 to play but Superior maintained at least a seven-point advantage the rest of the way.. | Story and Stats

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT MET:  Each team won on their own court, with the Pointers taking an 80-58 decision in Stevens Point in January, but Stout taking a 76-68 win in Menomonie in February to clinch the fourth seed in the WIAC Tournament. Sami Schoeder scored 21 points to lead Stout to the win. Stout trailed by as much as 15 points in the first half, but starting making their run with about three minutes left in the first half. AWARDS AND HONORS: Jenna Goldsmith was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week, Dec. 8...Sarah Schoch was selected to the all-tournament team at the St. Norbert Tip-Off Classic... Kyleigh Hebert and Katelynne Folkers were All-WIAC honorable mention selections in 2013-14.

STOUT LAST SEASON: Virtually out of the playoff picture as the season wore down, UW-Stout (11-5, 7-9 WIAC) put together a four-game winning streak to conclude the regular season and earn the fourth seed in the WIAC tournament. TRADITION: In 10 of the last 15 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 12 of the last 15 years.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Seniors Brea Boomer, Haley Froehlich and Katelynne Folkers, along with junior Kyleigh Hebert, are 2014-15 team captains.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (446-279) is in his 28th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. UW-Stevens Point:  Shirley Egner (478-203) is in her 26th season with the Pointers and is the all-time winningest coach in WIAC history.  Over the last 13 seasons, Coach Egner has guided the Pointers to an average of over 23 wins per season and the team's 305-74 record over that span is the best mark of any WIAC team.

THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater. Superior will be leaving the WIAC after this season.

UP NEXT:  Stout will then be off until they head to the DePauw (Ind) University Tournament, Dec. 28-29. The Blue Devils will play Millsaps University, Sunday, Dec. 28 and host DePauw University, Monday, Dec. 29.
