WBB Preview: Blue Devils open home schedule with tournament

UW-Stout Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout:  Live Stats | Live Video

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:  The Blue Devils (1-4, 0-0 WIAC) will host the UW-Stout Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout, Nov. 29-30 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils will play St. Scholastica, (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. Gustavus Adolphus College (3-0, 0-0 MIAC) and the University of Dubuque (2-1, 0-0 IIAC) will meet in the first game at 1 p.m. The tournament is set up in a championship format. The consolation game will be Sunday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. with the championship game at 3 p.m. Live Stats will be available for all games. The Stout games will be available in a live video stream.

WEBCASTS:  All UW-Stout home games will be available in a live video stream by Blue Devil Video, with Sam Ripp or Tom Schmelze  on the call. WMEQ 880 Radio, with Pete Knutson, Jimmie Kaska or Jake Bostrom, will broadcast and provide a live audio stream of away conference games. Stout will provide Live Stats for all home games. Check the Blue Devil Webcast page or under details of the schedule page to see broadcasts and Live Stats available when Stout is on the road. Any WIAC Championship Tournament basketball games will be not be video streamed live.

STOUT THIS SEASON:  The Blue Devils come into the 2014-15 season with six seniors, the largest group of returning seniors in quite a few years. Jenna Goldsmith is leading the team in scoring with 12.0 points, but shehas  missed the last two games. Katelynne Folkers is averaging 9.0 points and a team-best 5.8 rebounds. Haley Froehlich has come off the bench to average 8.8 points. Kyleigh Hebert is tossing in 8.0 points and is averaging 4.0 reounbs. STOUT LAST TIME OUT:  The Blue Devils held a lead over Hamline University late in the game Nov. 25, but the Pipers came back to tie the contest at 83-83 in regulation on their way to a 95-89 overtime win. Katelynne Folkers scored six of her team-high 17 points in the overtime portion, but her points were the only Blue Devil points in overtime.  Haley Froehlich finished with 15 points, Kyleigh Hebert 13 and Brea Boomer 10. The Pipers also had four players in double figures. LAST TIME OUT:  The Pipers had three players score in double digits with Chelsey Bonsante leading the way with 31 points. Jordan Sammons had a monster game with 24 points, six assists and 20 rebounds and  Chloe Graves had 17 points with seven assists. Northwestern led for a good portion of the game until Hamline took a 66-62 lead with 3:44 left in regulation. ST. SCHOLASTICA: The Saints come into this week's action with only two games in and are coming off a 71-59 loss to UW-Superior, Nov. 25. Kelsey Sorenson had 16 points for the Saints and Brittani Brennan contributed 12 points. The Saints opened the season with a 63-47 home loss to Augsburg College, Nov. 22. Sorenson is the team's leader, averaging 13.9 points and Brennan is averaging 9.0 points. The Saints have been outscored 67.0-53.0.  | Saints Statistics

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS: The Gusties have opened the 2014-15 season with three straight home wins over UMAC opponents, and have outscored their opponents 79.0-52.0. Gustavus opened with an 81-31 win over Crown College, then took a 16-point, 74-58 win over Martin Luther and followed that up with an 82-67 win over Minnesota-Morris. Mikayla Miller is averaging 21.0 points, 5.7rebounds and 4.0 assists. Lindsey Johnson is averaging 13.7 points and 5.7 rebounds. UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE: Jenna Kotas has been the Spartans leading scorer in all three of they previous games, scoring 22 in a 94-79 win over Edgwood Colelge, 20 in an 82-79 loss to UW-Platteville and 16 in a 77-60 win over UW-La Crosse. Kotas leads the team with 19.2 points per contest, followed by Jessica Goetz with 13.7 and 11.0 by Maggie Schmidt. Kayla Springer and Emily Brinker lead the team off the glass, averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest. Schmidt and Kotas are both averaging 6.0 caroms. AWARDS AND HONORS: Sarah Schoch was selected to the all-tournament team at the St. Norbert Tip-Off Classic...Sami Schoeder, Kyleigh Hebert, and Katelynne Folkers were All-WIAC honorable mention selections in 2013-14...Sami Schoeder was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual athlete of the week, Feb. 18...Kyleigh Hebert was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual athlete of the week Jan. 6.

STOUT LAST SEASON:  Virtually out of the playoff picture as the season wore down, UW-Stout (11-5, 7-9 WIAC) put together a four-game winning streak to conclude the regular season and earned the fourth seed in the WIAC tournament. TRADITION: In 10 of the last 15 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 12 of the last 15 years.

TEAM CAPTAINS:  Seniors Brea Boomer, Haley Froehlich and Katelynne Folkers, along with junior Kyleigh Hebert, are 2014-15 team captains.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (444-278) is in his 28th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record.   Hamline University:  Kerri Stockwell enters her fifth season at the helm of the women's basketball program in 2014-15, following a successful stint as the head assistant coach with Concordia University-St. Paul. Stockwell also serves as Hamline's senior woman administrator.  St. Scholastica: Stacy Deadrick enters her 21st season as the head coach for the St. Scholastica women's basketball program in 2014-15. Deadrick is also the Senior Woman Administrator on the Saints' Athletics staff. In 2013-14, Deadrick led the Saints to a program-record 11 UMAC victories and tied for the second-most wins overall (16) in her time at CSS. For her efforts she was named the UMAC Coach of the Year.; Gustavus Adolphus: Laurie Kelly will begin her third season as the head coach of the Gustavus women's basketball team.  Kelly, a 1993 graduate of the University of St. Thomas with a degree in speech communications, came to Gustavus from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where she directed the Division I Lumberjacks for nine seasons.; University of Dubuque: The Spartans are coached by Mark Noll, a former UW-Stout assistant coach for seven years. Noll began his stint with the Spartans for the 2007-08 season. An assistant coach for the Spartans is former Blue Devil All-American Kelsey (Duoss) Steinhagen.

THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a  member of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater.  Superior will be leaving the WIAC after this season.
