Baseball Preview: Stout to close season, where else but on the road

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (12-25, 6-16 WIAC) will close out the season when they travel to UW-La Crosse (16-19, 8-13 WIAC) Wednesday, May 8 in a game that was originally scheduled for April 10. The Blue Devils were not able to host a home game this season, and will have played all 39 games on the road.

PITCHING STAFF: Brad Kohn, Dan Britts, Carter Vogt and Andrew Driessen - all four seniors -  have carried the bulk of the starts throughout the season overall and in particular, the conference season. Kohn has gotten the most nods with nine starts with 49.0 inning tossed and threw a complete game Sunday. Kohn leads the team in strikeouts with 33. Britts has made eight starts and has tossed a team-high 55.2 innings, trailing Kohn in strikeouts with 28. Driessen picked up two wins in a single week, getting the win over Stevens Point,  then going the full nine innings against Platteville. Driessen has made 11 appearances and has six starts. Driessen has recorded 43.2 innings pitched with 21 strikeouts. Vogt thas made five starts in eight appearances. Vogt has 32.2 innings pitched and has recorded 13 strikeouts. Adam Widder has made 12 appearances, 11 out of the bull pen and has an ERA of 2.28 with 20.1 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts, getting the win in long relief last Wednesday at La Crosse. Freshman Nick Lamers has made nine appearances, all out of the bullpen. Lamers has 12.1 innings pitched and has the teams' best strikeout to innings mark, striking out 15 in 12.1 innings pitched. Ian Schiltz has nine appearances, eight out of the pen. Kellen Pearson has seen time on the hill (five appearances, two starts) and in the infield. Cole Wynveen and Jake Brehm have each made six appearances.

HITTING THE BALL:  While Stout is 10-23 overall, hitting the ball doesn't appear to be a huge problem for the Blue Devils, but scoring runs tends to be. As a squad, Stout has pushed out 350 hits to 367 for their opponents, but Stout's foes have scored 255 runs to Stout's 187.  Mitch LaVelle has moved his batting average to a team-best .396 (53-134).  Brady Burzynski, who has now started 13 games, has kept a steady average, hitting .340 (18-53) with eight RBI over 19 games played. . Charlie Meyer, while alternating at catcher and designated hitter, continues to do well in average with a .352 (37-105). Meyer is second on the team in RBI with 23. Santiago Morales leads the team in RBI with 33, and is hitting .310 (45-145). Morales leads the team in all three categories of extra base hits with 14 doubles, four triples and six home runs.

UW-LA CROSSE: The Eagles are seeking the fourth and final WIAC Baseball Championship tournament spot.. The tournament will be held in Whitewater, May 11-12, and the Eagles need to win at least one of the two games over the Blue Devils Wednesday. Adam Cordova, who recently was named academic all-district, leads the team at the plate with with an average of .357 (40-112). He is third in the WIAC in doubles (13), has a team-high four home runs and has punched in 34 RBI. Josh Rowles is hitting .346 (37-107), while Garrett Novinski is hitting .326 (29-89). Novinski is third in the league in stolen bases with a perfect 11 thefts in 11 attempts.  Cole Cefalu has driven in 22 runs. Joel Effetz leads the Eagles' pitching effort, with a 4-2 record and an ERA of 2.86. Effertz as 45 strikeouts in 44.0 innings of work. Kevin Johnson (3.83 ERA, 49.1 IP,  24K) and Tim Verthein (486 ERA, 50.0 IP, 35K) bolster the pitching crew.   | 2013 Eagle Statistics

LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET: The teams split last week in La Crosse with the Eagles taking the first game, 11-4, and the Blue Devils the second game, 7-5.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Brad Kohn repeated as WIAC pitcher of the week after going nine complete innings in a 1-0 win over Superior, May 5...Andrew Driessen was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after getting wins over UW-Stevens Point and UW-Platteville...Santiago Morales was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week, April 16...Charlie Meyer was named UW-Stout Athlete of the week, March 19, after starting the first six games of the season with a .600 batting average...Brad Kohn was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pitcher of the week, March 12 after allowing just seven hits and no earned runs through his first 11 innings pitched this season.

COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, is in his second season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 17-22 record last year, an improvement from their 12- and 11-win seasons the previous two years. In the fall, 2013, Gardenhire played for Germany in the World Baseball Classic.  Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005.
