Blue Devils travel to Whitewater to gain split with Superior

WHITEWATER (May 4, 2013) - UW-Stout used a three-run seventh inning in the second game  to hold off UW-Superior and secure a split in the first day of two games at Miller Field at UW-Whitewater. The Yellowjackets won the first game, 8-6, while Stout came back to win the second game, 7-5.

Stout (11-24, 5-15 WIAC) got RBIs from Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn), Charlie Meyer (So, Janesville) and Colin Pechacek (So, River Falls) to tally three runs in the seventh. Coming into the inning, Superior held a 4-3 lead. Superior (15-22, 8-14 WIAC) scored a single run in the bottom of the inning on a Robbie Vieth single to pull to within one run.

The Blue Devils made the score 7-5 when Morales drove in his second run of the game in top of the ninth. Morales finished the game hitting 3-for-5. Blue Devil shortstop Mitch LaVelle (Fr, Chippewa Falls) also hit 3-for-5 as Stout finished with 14 hits. Adam Widder (So, Wauwatosa) came on in relief in the sixth inning, striking out two, to get the win.

The Yellowjackets smacked the ball around, too, finishing with 16 hits, led by Veith and Sam Holden, who each went 3-for-5.

in the opener, Superior took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second on RBIs by Jeff Miller and Tony Remund and another on an error.

Stout took the lead in the top of the third when Austin Littman (Fr, Pittsville) drove in a pair of runs on a double, Kasey Kruse plated a run on a single up the middle and Matt Guida (Sr, Hawley, Minn) recorded a sacrifice fly. The Yellowjackets tied the score on Fairbank's sacrifce fly to right field. The Yellowjackets added two more run in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth inning, an RBI double by Tyler Duex.

The games were originally scheduled for Superior, then moved to Menomonie when Superior's field would not be ready for play. A snowstorm in northwestern Wisconsin Thursday, forced the games to to be moved to Whitewater.
