WIAC softball tourney moves to Onalaska Sunday; Stout to face La Crosse

MADISON (May 3, 2013) -  Due to snow-covered fields in Eau Claire, Wis., along with an unstable forecast throughout the state, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Championship has been reduced to a one-day, single-elimination tournament.  The six-team event will be held at the Omni Center in Onalaska, Wis., on Sunday (May 5).

The winner of the event earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.

Championship Schedule
Game 1--UW-La Crosse (#5) vs. UW-Stout (#4), 11 a.m.
Game 2--UW-River Falls (#6) vs. UW-Oshkosh (#3), 11 a.m.
Game 3--UW-Eau Claire (#1) vs. Winner of Game 1, 1 p.m.
Game 4--UW-Whitewater (#2) vs. Winner of Game 2, 1 p.m.
Game 5*--Winner of Game 3 vs. Winner of Game 4

*Game 5 will begin one hour after the conclusion of the last semifinal game, unless both teams mutually agree to start earlier.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (22-12, 9-7 WIAC) has earned a bid to the WIAC Softball Championship and were scheduled to meet UW-Oshkosh in the first round, but with a shift to a one-day, single elimination tournament, the fourth seeded will now face fifth seeded UW-La Crosse (21-13, 8-8 WIAC), Sunday, May 5 at 11 a.m. at the Omni Center fields in Onalaska.The winner will face top seeded UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m. The championship game is set for one hour after the conclusion of the final semi-final game.

THE BLUE DEVILS: After 12 consecutive conference games at home at Don & Nona Williams Stadium, the Blue Devils took on non-conference foe Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., April 30, and split with the Pipers, winning the first, 6-0, but dropping the second, 5-1, to close out the regular season.  The Blue Devils have three players who have recorded 28 or more RBI this year - Taylor Workman (32), Alison Gray (31) and Sam Hastings (28). Not surprisingly, all three are power hitters, but they are all leaders on the team in average. Workman is hitting .381 (32-84) with eight doubles and five home runs. Gray is hitting .369 (41-111) with six doubles and nine home runs. Hastings is hitting .328 (39-119) with seven doubles and seven home runs. Erin Moss leads the everyday hitters in average at .395 (45-114) with eight doubles, three triples and three home runs. Moss has 16 stolen bases. As a team, Stout is posting a batting average of .307 and 33 total home runs. Pitcher Tori Workman is hitting .397 (25-63). As a team, Stout last reached a batting average of .300 was in 2000 when they batted .300. The 33 home runs far surpasses the 24 home runs hit in 2005.  In the circle, Tori Workman has a 15-7 overall record in the circle with 73 strikeouts. BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout split a pair of non-conference games at Hamline University, Tuesday, April 30, winning the first, 6-0, but losing the second, 5-1.

UW-LA CROSSE: The Eagles ended their regulars season by completing a halted game with UW-Whitewater, April 29 in River Falls. The game that was started April 15 with the Eagles leading 1-0 finished with an identical 1-0 score. Katie Fink leads the EAgles wtih a .379 average (39-103) and 15 RBi. Lindsey Sheehan is hitting .370 (40-108) with 17 RBI. Alie Meyer has a team-best 31 RBI with five home runs and an average of .304 (.34-112). Lauren Beres has tossed 125.1 innings with 67 strikeouts, an ERA of 2.12 and a record of 9-10.

LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-Stout scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to take a 4-3 first game win, but committed four errors in the nightcap and couldn't recover, dropping the second game to UW-La Crosse, 5-2, April 8 at the Omni Center. With the score knotted in the 11th inning at 2 apiece, Stout's Erin Moss reached on a one out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Sam Hasting's single to right center. Alison Gray gave Stout a 4-2 lead when she came home on Gray's double. The Eagles' Katie Fink led off the bottom of the 11th with a home run and Emily Holdorf singled. Holdorf was forced at second base. Stout pitcher Tori Workman  forced a pop up and struck out the final batter to get the 11 inning win, striking out five for the game. Stout scored two runs in the fourth inning, but the Eagles cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Gray was 3-for-5 in the game, while Workman was 2-for-3. Fink was 4-for-4 for the Eagles. In the late game, Stout took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Hannah Sweet drove in a pair of runs with a shot down the right field line. The Eagles put up their first run on the night in the bottom of the first with an infield hit. La Crosse would chip away all evening, tying the game in the fourth, taking the lead in the fifth and putting up a pair of runs in the sixth for the final score. None of the final four runs of the game were earned runs. Nicole Rogers made her first collegiate start, allowing two runs, but only one earned, while scattering seven hits. But Denise Sawdey was saddled with the loss, pitching 1 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned run. Megan Nelson went the distance for the Eagles, scattering six hits, two runs, one earned. None of the four pitchers that worked the game notched a strikeout. There were only two walks in the game and no hit batters, but seven wild pitches. Moss was 2-for-3 for Stout. Holldorf was 2-for-4 for La Crosse and Lindsey Sheehan was 2-for-3. The Eagles stranded 11 runners, while Stout left four on base.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Erin Moss was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week, April 24...Taylor Workman was selected at the WIAC and the UW-Stout athlete of the week after going 8-of-9 against UW-Platteville, April 7...Alison Gray was selected as the WIAC position player of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week after the Blue devils got off to a 12-4 overall start...Erin Moss was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after the Blue Devils started at a 3-1 overall record.

COACHES: Blue Devil coach Chris Stainer (269-356, overall; 251-331, at UW-Stout) is in her 15th season at Stout and her 16th season overall.

ON DECK: The NCAA Division III Regional tournament is scheduled to run May 9-13 at sites to be determined. The NCAA Division III Championships are scheduled for May 17-21 at Carson Park in Eau Claire
