LA CROSSE (May 1, 2013) -
Charlie Meyer (So, Janesville) hit a three-run home in the first inning of the second game, but UW-Stout still needed to come from behind to take a second game, 7-4, win over UW-La Crosse Wednesday. The Eagles won the first game, 11-4.
The Eagles (16-15, 8-9 WIAC) took advantage of a Stout error in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 4-3 lead, then added a single run in the third before the Blue Devils (10-23, 4-14 WIAC) began their comeback.
This time it was Stout's turn to take advantage of La Crosse mistakes.
Brett Vavra (So, Chippewa Falls) and
Kellen Pearson (Fr, Hudson) drew leadoff walks in the fourth inning. An error allowed Vavra to score and Pearson move third. Pearson came home on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Hallahan (Jr, Lester Prairie, Minn).
Kasey Kruse (So, Boyceville) drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single.
Vavra gave Stout an insurance run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Adam Widder (So, Wauwatosa) came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and got the Blue Devils out of a bases loaded jam. Widder would go on to strikeout two and 4.2 innings of shutout ball to earn the win.
Meyer finished the game hitting 3-for-5, while
Matt Guida was 2-for-5. Stout finished with nine hits, while the Eagles had seven hits. Brooks Braga and Garrett Novinski each finished with two hits for La Crosse.
In the opener, the Eagles took a 5-0 lead with two runs in the second, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Stout pulled to within 5-2 in the sixth inning when
Austin Littmann (Fr, Pittsville) and
Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) hit back-to-back home runs. For Littman, it was his first collegiate round-tripper. The Eagles tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth. La Crosse scored another run in the eighth and Morales hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the top of the ninth. Morales finished the game 3-for-4, with two home runs and a double.
Novinski had two home runs and four RBI to lead the Eagles, going 2-for-5. Alex Cordova had a two-run home run in the sixth.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at noon. The Blue Devils return to La Crosse, Wednesday, May 8 to round out the regular season.
