PLATTEVILLE (April 7, 2013) - UW-Stout came from behind in both games to earn a sweep over UW-Platteville Sunday, at Pioneer Stadium, winning the first, 5-4, in nine innings and taking the second 13-6.
In the WIAC opener for the Blue Devils (14-4, 2-0 WIAC),
Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn) laid down a bunt and
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) beat the throw home as the Blue Devils completed the come-from-behind win over UW-Platteville, 5-4, in nine innings.
After one inning, the Blue Devils trailed 3-1, but climbed the ladder back with two runs in the sixth inning on pinch hitter
Danielle Hoover's (Fr, Stevens Point) single, then tied the game on
Alison Gray's (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn) home run in the seventh inning.
Moss led off the ninth inning with a ground rule double, then advanced to third when
Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) beat out a bunt. Hastings stole second base. Following an out, Moss beat the throw home on Sweet's bunt to give Stout what would prove to be the final score.
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) picked up the long-distance win, coming on in relief in the second inning after the Pioneers' Haley Salazar hit a lead-off home run. Workman wrapped up the final inning in 1-2-3 fashion and finished the game allowing no runs, six hits and striking out three.
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
In the nightcap, Stout opened the game with back-to-back home runs by Hastings and Gray, but then trailed 3-2 after the Pioneers tallied three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Taylor Workman drove in a run in the top of the third to tie the score and Stout had a four-run outburst in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run, two-out home run by Gray., givng the Blue Devils a 7-3 lead.
But the Pioneers (7-7, 2-2 WIAC) answered with three runs in the fifth to pull to within 7-6. Stout had their own answer with a three-run sixth inning as
Taylor Workman drove in a pair of runs and
Tori Workman drove in a run to help her own cause. Stout put up three more runs in the seventh, with
Taylor Workman driving in her fourth run of the game.
Erin Moss scored on a wild pitch and Hastings had an RBI.
Taylor Workman was 5-for-5 in the game with four RBI and 8-for-9 for the day with five total RBI. Gray was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Hastings was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Tori Workman earned her second win of the day, pitching six innings in the nightcap -14 innings for day - with nine hits and two strikeouts.
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn) worked the final inning and shut the Pioneers down in order.
Stout is scheduled to host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 10 at 4 p.m. Stout is tentatively scheduled to play at UW-La Crosse, Monday, April 8.
