ST. PAUL, Minn. (April 30, 2013) - For UW-Stout it was off to the races in the first game, but then the brakes were applied and brought the Blue Devils offense to a halt as Stout split the final regular season series of the year, Stout winning the first, 6-0, but losing the second, 5-1, to Hamline University Tuesday.

Stout (22-12) took advantage of two Hamline (17-15) errors and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, then added a run in the fourth and two runs in the seventh inning to score the first game win.

With one out, Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) and Alison Gray (Sr, Cloud, Minn) reached on back-to-back errors and clean-up hitter Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) made the Pipers pay when she drove both in with a double. Sara Mueller (Fr, Faribautl, Minn), who came in as a pinch runner for Workman, came in when Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) singled to center field.

From the circle, Tori Workman scattered four runs, struck out six and did not allow a runner past second base. The younger Workman also talked with her bat, driving in a run in the fourth. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the seventh inning. Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) stole home on a double steal with Hastings and Gray drove in Hastings with a double down the left field line.

In the nightcap, Stout couldn't get much going, even though they got a hit in each of the first three innings. The Pipers held a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings, then jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a three-run sixth. Pitcher Lauren Clouston drove in a run and Chelsea Simon drove in two more with a single.

The Blue Devils got their only run of the game in the top of the seventh when they executed their second double steal of the night, this time Jessica Nicol (Sr, Eau Claire) coming home as Moss took second.

Stout managed only the three hits from the first three innings. Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn) struck out six, but allowed four runs, three earned.

Stout will compete in the WIAC Championship May 3-5 in Eau Claire.
