PLATTEVILLE (April 28, 2013) - After pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning,
Andrew Driessen pitched the full nine innings as UW-Stout took the final game in the series at UW-Platteville, 3-1, Sunday at Kendall Murray Field.
Driessen got himself into trouble in that first inning, waling the lead off batter and hitting a player with a pitch. But he forced two fly balls, and then snagged a line drive for the third out to give his offense some momentum going into the bottom half of the inning.
Mitch LaVelle singled to open the inning, then advanced on
Austin Littman's walk. Following a pop up, LaVelle scored on
Charlie Meyer's single up the middle and Littman moved to second. Both moved on a wild pitch and Littman came home on
Matt Guida's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Pioneers would cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second, but Driessen remained steady throughout the game. Stout got an insurance run in the fifth when LaVelle scored on an error. Stout threatened again in the eighth, but left the bases loaded.
Driessen struck out four and walked two, while allowing only four hits. Stout finished the game with 10 hits with LaVelle, Littman and
Jake Lunow each getting two hits.
The Blue Devils dropped the first game, 14-10, as big innings appeared throughout the box score. The Pioneers scored fivein the fifth and five in eighth. Stout had four runs in the third and four in the eighth to cut the lead to 12-10, but the Pioneers tallied two more in the ninth.
Colin Pechacek had three hits for Stout and
Santiago Morales and LaVelle each had two hits.
Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, May 1, then will host UW-Superior, May 4-5.
