Blue Devils use big innings to bounce back to earn split with Pointers

STEVENS POINT (April 24, 2013) - UW-Stout used two big innings to defeat UW-Stevens Point in the second half of a doubleheader to earn a split with the Pointers Wednesday at University Field. The Pointers won the first game, 12-2, but Stout came back for a 14-4 win. Both games were decided in seven innings.

Matt Guida (Sr, Hawley, Minn) broke out of a slump and pounded two home runs and drive in six total runs. Guida hit a three-run home run to left center to power a six-run third inning, then repeated the feat with a three-run shot in a six-run seventh inning.

Guida, who didn't play in the first game today, came into the day with a batting average of .180 and had gone 5-for-25 over the last nine games played, with only two RBI. Guida found his groove, going 4-for-5 with the six RBI and bumped his average up nearly 30 points to .227.

Guida's bat was not the only Blue Devil (8-19, 2-10 WIAC) bat to come to life in the second game. Brady Burzynski (Fr, Eau Claire) was 3-for-5 - on the day, Burzynski was 6-for-9 - with three RBI, Mitch La Velle (Fr, Chippewa Falls) was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Jared Francois (Jr, Burlington) was 3-for-5 with a run batted in.

The game was tied at 2 apiece after the first inning.  La Velle opened the game with a lead-off triple and scored on Burzynski's ground out. Colin Pechacek (So, River Falls) stayed hot, reaching with a double and scored on Francois's center field single.

The Pointers (18-7, 8-4 WIAC) tied the score Sean Gerber's two run home run in the bottom of the inning.

Stout shot out to an 8-2 lead inthe third. Buoyed by Guida's two-run home run, Burzynski, Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul,  Minn) and Pechacek drove in a run.

The Pointers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 8-4. Stout tallied six runs again in the sixth inning. Kellen Pearson (Fr, Hudson) reached when he was hit by a pitch and La Velle walked. Burzynski drove in Pearson and La Velle scored on an error. Burzynski would score on a wild pitch and Guida would hit his second three run bomb.

Adam Widder (So, Wauwatosa) came on for winning pitcher Andrew Driessen (Sr, Champlin Park, Minn) and allowed one hit in the seventh to close out the game. Driessen went six innings, allowing three eaerned runs on 11 hits and struck out five.

In the opener, the Pointers tallied seven runs in the fifth inning, then ended  the game on the 10-run rule on a sacrifice fly by Dan Douglas in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Pointers opened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, after Douglas opened the inning by reaching on an infield error. Douglas scored on Jimmy Coady's RBI single and Bryton Guckenburg drove in Coady moments later.

Stout got on the board in the top of the second when  Pechacek worked his way around the base paths after reaching on a single, then scored on a wild pitch. The Pointers got the run back when Douglas drove in his first run of the game in the bottom of the second. The Pointers added another run in the fourth before exploding for seven runs in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead.

Stout staved off elimination with a run in the seventh when Burzynski drove in Charlie Meyer, before the Pointers ended the game on Douglas' sacrifice.

Burzynski was 3-for-4 for the Blue Devils, while Pechacek and La Velle each had two hits. Riley Spetz was 3-for-4 for the Pointers, getting his two RBI on a home run in the fifth. He also scored four runs. Coady and Guckenberg each had two hits.

Stout is scheduled to host UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. Both days are scheduled to begin at noon.
