Blue Devil late rally comes up short, Whitewater takes four game sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  | UW-Whitewater 7, UW-Stout 4 | UW-Whitewater 12, Stout 8

WHITEWATER (April 21, 2013) - UW-Stout showed some late game spunk in the final game of a four-game series with UW-Whitewater, but the late rally came up short as the Blue Devils dropped the fourth game of the series, 12-8, Sunday at Prucha Field in Jim Miller Stadium. Stout lost the first game of the day, 7-4.

After giving up four runs in the top of the ninth to fall behind 12-3, the Blue Devils (7-18, 1-9 WIAC) put up five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Colin Pechacek (So, River Falls) opened the inning with a lead-off triple, then was plated when Jared Francois (Jr, Burlington) cracked a double to center field.

Following an out, Jackson Hallahan (Jr, Lester Prairie, Minn) moved Francois to third with a double down the left field line. Brady Burzynski (Fr, Eau Claire) drove in Francois with a single through the left side. Ryan Gangestad (So, Maple Grove, Minn) loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Following a Warhawk (22-4, 13-1 WIAC) pitching change, Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) moved Burzynski to third and brought Hallahan in with a deep sacrifice fly to left field. Charlie Meyer (So, Janesville) drove in Burzynski and Gangestad with a double in the gap in right-center field for the final runs of the game.

Burzynski, Meyer and Francois each had two hits, with Meyer driving in three runs. Stout finished with 11 hits, but Whitewater collected 20 hits.

Stout opened the scoring in game one when Morales drove in Burzynski, who had opened the first inning with a lead-off double, by punching a double. Whitewater jumped to a 5-1 lead with four runs in the second and another in the third, then added a single run in the fifth before Stout made it 7-3 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Meyer and Kasey Kruse (So, Boyceville). The Warhawks got two in the seventh and four in the ninth before Stout broke out the lumber in the bottom of the ninth.

In the opener, Whitewater led throughout the game, taking a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth when Morales scored from third when Kruse hit into a double play.  Jared Fon tripled in two runs for Whitewater in the seventh and Stout answered back with two in the bottom of the inning on RBIs by Jake Lunow (So, Princeton) and Gangestad. Michael Gonzales hit a two run double for Whitewater in the eighth and Stout's final run came in the ninth when Lunow scored on an infield error.

Pechacek showed a propensity for the long ball in the four game series. Playing as the designated hitter on Saturday, Pechacek ripped a home run in game one and double in game two. On Sunday, playing in center field, he had a double in the first game and a triple in the second.

Stout is scheduled to travel to UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, April 24 for a 1 p.m. contest, then will try to play their first home games of the season when they are scheduled to host UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.
