Warhawks use big innings to take doubleheader from Stout

WHITEWATER (April 20, 2013) - UW-Whitewater used a couple of big innings in both games to sweep a doubleheader over UW-Stout Saturday at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium, 10-8, 11-2.

Late in the opener, Stout grabbed an 8-3 lead with a seven run eighth inning, but could not hold on as the Warhawks had a seven-run ninth to take the win.

Colin Pechacek hit a three run home run in the eighth inning to highlight Stout's attack. Ryan Gangestad doubled in a pair of runs and Santiago Morales drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to end the scoring in the innings. Morales had opened the scoring in the inning when he scored on an error.

The Warhawks nickeled and dimed their way to the lead in the ninth, with RBIs by Mikole Pierce, Samuel Keller and David Cladis before Michael Gonzales rapped  a two-run double and Dylan Friend had a two run single.

Stout left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

Gangestad finished the game 3-for-5. Morales, Pechacek,  Charlie Meyer, Brady Burzynski and Jake Lunow each had two hits for the Blue Devils.

Gonzales and Jared Fon were each 3-for-6 for the Warhawks.  Friend, Pierce, Cladis and Steve Bartlein each had a pair of hits.

In the second contest, holding a 5-1 lead, the Warhawks scored three run in the seventh inning and six different players drove in runs in the eighth to cap off the win.

Stout's first scored in the first inning when Gangestad opened the inning with a triple, then came home on Morales' groundout. The Warhawks scored twice in the second when Pierce scored with a leadoff home run and Casey Power drove in a run.

Stout's only other run came in the bottom of the eighth when Mitch LaVelle scored from third on a wild pitch.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, but Nelson Field was unplayable. The teams will meet again, Sunday, April 21 in Whitewater. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
