Baseball Preview: Blue Devils to travel to first place UW-Whitewater

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: Now that UW-Stout (7-14, 1-5 WIAC) has gotten in a number of conference games, they continue on with their road warrior ways, traveling to UW-Whitewater (18-4, 9-1 WIAC) Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, April 21 at noon. The games were orginally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, but Nelson Field is not yet ready to be played on. Stout last played a home game, May 5, 2012. Whitewater has been the Mecca for WIAC schools this season. With an artificial surface on the infield of Prucha Field, the Warhawks have hosted seven dates so far this season, stretching back to March 30. Whitewater was scheduled to play at Oshkosh, April 17, but the first game was suspended in the third inning and will be completed April 24. The two teams will then play three seven-inning contests in attempt to wrap up their four game series for the season. The Blue Devils did manage to get their two games in at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, despite the rain. The Pointers swept the dreary day, 2-1, 12-1.

THE 2013 BLUE DEVILS: Stout came up just short in the rain against the Pointers in game one, leaving the bases loaded in the second inning and stranding two in the third on their way to a 2-1 first game loss Wednesday. PITCHING STAFF: Brad Kohn, Cody Loertscher, Dan Britts, Carter Vogt and Andrew Driessen have earned the majority of the starts this season. Kohn and Britts have seen the most time on the hill, with Britts leading the way with 29.2 innings, while Kohn has been out there for 26.2 innings. Britts has a 2-3 overall record with six appearances, with a 3.03 ERA and 15 strikeouts. Britts allowed one earned run against the Pointers The left-handed Kohn is 1-2 overall, leads the team in strikeouts with 19, and has an ERA of 4.39. Driessen has made seven appearances and has a 1-2 overall record, with an ERA of 5.23 and 11 strikeouts. Vogt has made four appearances and was in the rotation at Oshkosh  Loetscher has not played since March 22. Adam Widder has made the most appearances for the Blue Devils with eight, with all but one coming out of the pen. Freshman Nick Lamers has been a major player out of the pen, making six appearances and whiffing 13, second most on the team. The Blue Devils threw 13 different pitchers in the Oshkosh series.

HITTING THE BALL:  Charlie Meyer is leading the Blue Devils in average as he alternates between catcher and designated hitter. The sophomore is hitting .435 (20-46) with 12 RBI. Kasey Kruse has come around the last several games, and has pulled his average to .400. Shortstop Mitch LaVelle is hitting .351 (27-77) with 15 runs scored. Santiago Morales is leading the team in runs batted in with 18. He is hitting .321 (25-78) and of the everyday players, leads the team in slugging percentage with a .603, tallying seven doubles, three triples and three home runs. Ryan Gangestad got off to a slow start this season and had a nine game hitting streak snapped against the Pointers. Fifteen player have driven in at least two runs and nine have driven in at least five runs.

UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks were selected in a WIAC preseason poll to take the conference title. Whitewater has collected 13 regular-season championships and made five consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearances.  The Warhawks welcome back 24 letterwinners from last year's unit that finished second in NCAA Division III with 37 home runs, eighth with 553 hits and ninth with 370 runs scored.  Leading this year's returnees are junior Jared Fon and sophomore Marty Herum, who shared the WIAC Position Player of the Year honor in 2012 with UW-La Crosse's Jay Fanta.  Fon was second in the conference with 49 runs scored, 77 hits and 44 RBI, third with a .383 batting average and fourth with a .602 slugging percentage.  Herum led the league with 82 hits and 58 RBI, while ranking second with a .400 batting average.  Head Coach John Vodenlich has a .742 winning percentage - the highest of any active WIAC baseball coach. The Warhawks have four players that rank in the top 10 in the WIAC stats for batting average. Mikole Pierce leads the way by hitting .409 (27-66) and is third in the league. David Cladis is fourth (.400, 26-65), Jared Fon fifth (.398, 37-93) and Marty Herum seventh (.395, 34-96). Herum leads the Warhawks in RBI with 26, tied for second in the WIAC. Matt Roberts leads the WIAC pitchers in strikeouts with 47 in 38 innings pitched. Roberts is currently 4-0 with an ERA of 3.55. Roberts, along with Tom Kerndt and Justin Lambert, have started at least five games. Kerndt is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.18 and Lambert is 4-1 with an ERA of 3.38. Quinton Zander (2.25 ERA, 8 appearances) and Scott Plaza (2.45 ERA, 6 appearances) have been the major players of the bullpen.  | 2013 Whitewater Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Warhawks took all four games last season, 10-6, 11-3, 12-1, and 11-8, in Whitewater.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Santiago Morales was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week, April 16...Charlie Meyer was named UW-Stout Athlete of the week, March 19, after starting the first six games of the season with a .600 batting average...Brad Kohn was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pitcher of the week, March 12 after allowing just seven hits and no earned runs through his first 11 innings pitched this season.

COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, is in his second season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 17-22 record last year, an improvement from their 12- and 11-win seasons the previous two years. Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005.

ON DECK: The Blue Devils are scheduled to play at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m., weather and field conditions permitting. Stout is scheduled to host UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28, again weather and field conditions permitting.
