OSHKOSH (April 13, 2013) -
Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) had a triple and a home run to lead UW-Stout to a 7-6 win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Tidemann Field as the Blue Devils split their conference opening doubleheader with the Titans. Morales hit a home run in game one, but Oshkosh won the opener, 15-1.
Stout (7-10, 1-1 WIAC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, another in the third and three in the fifth before the Titans (13-4, 2-3 WIAC) began a comeback.
Morales had a hand in both first inning scores, picking up an RBI when he reached on an infield error, stole second and came home on
Matt Guida's (Sr, Hawley, Minn) RBI single to center field. Morales scored in the third, reaching on a one-out triple, then came home on
Kasey Kruse's (So, Menomonie) single. Morales belted a two run home run in the fifth and Guida picked up his second RBI of the game.
The Titans scored five runs in the sixth as the Blue Devils aided their cause with three errors to pull to within 6-5. Stout got their final run in the bottom of the sixth when
Mitch LaVelle (Fr, Chippewa Falls) plated cousin
Brett Vavra (So, Chippewa Falls( with a sacrifice fly.
Nick Lamers (Fr, Freedom) earned the long distance save, going the final three innings. He did give up one run in the top of the ninth, but it was unearned. Lamers got the final out of the game on a strikeout.
Dan Britts (Sr, Nekoosa) snagged the win, going six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five.
Morales was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI, while Guida was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
The opener was not kind to the Blue Devils who gave up 15 unanswered runs after taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Morales' solo home run.
The Titans marked the scoreboard for five runs in the fifth, then put the Blue Devils away with two i nthe fourth, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh. Doug Beattie had a three-run home run in the fifth and Bobby Kachel and two-run home run in the sxith. Kachel was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Beattie finished with four RBI and Tyler Kamps had three RBI on three hits.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, but Nelson Field is not playable due to wintery conditions. The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday, April 14 in Oshkosh at noon.
