THIS WEEK'S GAMES: No one needs to be told these are trying days in the north country for the spring sports. Both UW-Stout (15-5, 3-1 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (15-5, 2-2 WIAC) were able to get their first four conference games in over the last week or so, but not without some moving of schedules. The teams are scheduled to play at Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Saturday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. The Blue Devils are coming off a sweep of UW-Platteville, April 7, and a split with UW-La Crosse, April 8. The Pointers went 2-2 last weekend in Platteville, but did not play the Pioneers. Platteville hosted a number of games on their football field, one of the few places in the state capable of hosting games. The Pointers were swept by UW-Eau Claire, but swept UW-Superior.
FIELD REGULATIONS: Due to the weather conditions and keeping in mind the playing surface, fans are reminded to stay in designated seating area. No bag chairs are allowed. No sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or gum is allowed. No pets are allowed on the turf.
THE BLUE DEVILS: As she seems to do year in and year out, the Blue Devils'
Alison Gray sits atop the Blue Devil stat sheet with a .433 batting average. Gray is hitting 29-67 with a league-best seven home runs and has bashed out four doubles and one triple to tip her slugging percentage to .836. Gray, who generally bats in the third spot, leads the team in RBI with 23. Designated player
Taylor Workman, this week's WIAC and UW-Stout's athlete of the week, is hitting at a .432 clip (19-44), with two home runs and five doubles, with 18 RBI. Shortstop
Erin Moss is hitting .429 (30-70) with four doubles, three triples and two home runs. She also leads the team in stolen bases with five. After getting tossed out the first two times stealing this year, Moss has thieved five consecutive bases. Freshman pitcher
Tori Workman has been helping her own cause by hitting .413 (19-46) with 12 RBI. In the circle, Workman has tossed 84.1 innings in 16 appearances and is posting a 9-4 overall record. She has a 1.91 ERA and has collected 41 strikeouts.
Laura Vanderhoof has a clean 6-0 overall record with an ERA of 1.92 in 43.2 innings pitched. In 11 appearances, Vanderhoof has 32 strikeouts.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to take a 4-3 first game win, but committed four errors in the nightcap and couldn't recover, dropping the second game to UW-La Crosse, 5-2, April 8 at the Omni Center in Onalaska. With the score knotted in the 11th inning at 2 apiece, Stout's
Erin Moss reached on a one out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on
Sam Hasting's single to right center.
Alison Gray gave Stout a 4-2 lead when she came home on Gray's double. La Crosse added a lead-off home run in the bottom of the 11th. Four errors doomed Stout in the second game, losing 5-2.
THE POINTERS: Katie Shulfer leads the way for the Pointers, hitting .453 (24-53) with seven doubles and 13 RBI. Jordon Schreiner is hitting .422 (27-64) with three home runs, two triples, five doubles and 19 RBI.
Paige Mueleman leads the team in home runs with four and matches Schreiner's 19 RBI.
Kali Riddell and
Michelle Jones are splitting time in the pitching circle. Riddell has tossed 67.1 innings and has a 10-1 overall record, while Jones has thrown 60.2 innings with a 5-4 overall record. Riddell has an ERA of 2.29 and Jones, 2.31. Riddell has 45 strikeouts, Jones 49.
POINTERS LAST TIME OUT: Michelle Jones tossed a perfect game in an 8-0, five inning affair with UW-Superior, then lost 8-3 to UW-Eau Claire, Sunday in Platteville. Jones recorded five strikeouts against the Yellowjackets and got seven fly ball outs to record the sixth perfect game in Pointer history.
