ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (March 8, 2013) - Five home runs helped UW-Stout score 22 runs on the afternoon, pushing them to a two-game sweep of St. Olaf College, Friday at the Irish Sports Dome.
Two home runs in the first game aided Stout to a 6-3 victory over the Oles before three homers – including two grand slams – helped them to a 16-3 rout to complete the sweep.
Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn.) and
Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) provided the grand slams and each ended the afternoon with six RBI.
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn.) used eight strikeouts in the first game to improve her season record to 2-0 before
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn.) picked up the win in the second.
Just as she did in Wednesday's second game,
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind.) began the morning with a leadoff home run. The go-ahead homer was Moss' first of three hits on the day. She also walked twice, reaching base on five of her seven plate appearances, and crossed home plate four times.
St. Olaf (0-2) grabbed the lead with a three-run third inning which included a two-run homer by Alex Lebens.
Moss drove in
Kaitlin Stark (Fr, Hastings, Minn.) in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to one run, but it was the sixth inning that proved decisive for Stout (3-1). Hastings started the inning with a single to left field and scored two batters later when
Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn.) hit her first home run of the year.
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn.) followed Sweet with a double and scored Stout's sixth and final run of the game on an RBI single by Vanderhoof, who allowed just four St. Olaf hits in her second win in as many starts.
Moss got things rolling again in the second game, doubling to lead off the first inning. She scored on a
Tori Workman sacrifice fly before Gray hit her first home run of the game, driving in
Lynzi Knudtson (So, Melrose) in the process to grab an early 3-0 lead.
Vanderhoof was relieved of pitching duties in the second game, but stayed in the batting order and led off the second inning with a single.
Courtney Smith (Fr, Dassel, Minn.) drove in Vanderhoof and Hastings picked up an RBI when she walked to score
Sam Stout (Jr, La Crosse), who singled earlier.
Then Gray hit a bases-clearing grand slam, her second home run of the game, upping her RBI total to six for the game and Stout's lead to 9-0.
After Workman pitched through a three up, three down third inning, Stout put the bats to work again. Moss drove in
Jessica Nicol (Sr, Eau Claire) with a single and
Kari Kolle (Fr, Eau Claire) walked to load the bases for Hastings.
No more than 15 minutes after Gray's grand slam, Hastings cleared the bases again with a home run that put Stout up, 15-0. The Blue Devils added their 16
th run of the game before the end of the inning and led, 16-0 after three.
St. Olaf put together three runs in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to prevent the eight-run rule from coming into effect.
Workman struck out four batters in three innings of work, allowing just two hits and no runs to even her season record at 1-1.
Stout will take their 3-1 record to Clermont, Fla. for spring break, where they will play 10 games between Mar. 15 and Mar. 24.
