ROCHESTER, Minn (March 6, 2013) - After dropping an opening game 9-2 decision, UW-Stout held on in the second game to take a 7-4 win over No. 2 Luther College Wednesday at the Rochester Dome in both team's season opener.
The Blue Devils (1-1) overcame four errors in the contest and stranded nine Luther (1-1) baserunners. Stout put together a four-run, five-hit fourth inning for most of their damage.
Kaitlin Stark (Fr, Hastings, Minn) and pitcher
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn) each had an RBI in the inning and
Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn) stole home. Gray also allowed a run to score when she got caught up between first and second, but made it safely to second.
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) led off the game with a home run to give Stout the lead. The Norse knotted the score with an unearned run in the third inning.
Stark was 2-for-3 in her first collegiate game.
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn), who pitched the first game loss, was 2-for-4 in the game, with two RBI and two runs scored on a two-run home run in the fifth. The Norse answered back in bottom of the inning with a two-run home run by Kelsey Weindruch. Luther threatened in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run, but leaving the bases loaded.
Vanderhoof went the distance for the win, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs. Stout outhit Luther, 11-7.
In the opener, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead when pitcher
Tori Workman reached on a two-out triple, then came home when
Sam Stout reached on an error.
The Norse took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Alise Miller and Kelsey Weindruch drove in runs. Stout tied the scored in the bottom of the inning when Moss drove in
Tori Workman.
Luther took a 4-2 lead when Carli Radil smacked two-run double in the fifth. Luther took command with a five run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Radil.
Luther outhit the Blue Devils, 11-5, and Stout committed three errors to one for Luther College.
In her collegiate debut, Workman surrendered seven earned runs, striking out four and walking three, working all seven innings. Becca Girvan gave up two runs, one earned, and struck out seven, but also walked seven. Both teams stranded nine runners.
The Blue Devils return to action Friday, March 8 when they meet St. Olaf College at the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn. First pitch in the doubleheader is slated for 10 a.m.
