WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (March 29, 2013) - UW-Stout hit the ball hard and often, Friday evening, as they scored 22 total runs in a pair of wins over Macalester College at the West St. Paul Sports Dome.
Stout needed only five innings to deal the Scots a 9-1 loss in the first game before using 16 hits to complete the sweep with a 13-7 win in the second.
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind.) was 7-for-8 on the evening, scoring four runs and driving in two more.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Macalester (8-10) struck first and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Stout (12-4) answered right back, however, in a big way. Moss evened the score when she crossed home a few batters after getting hit by a pitch to begin the game. Moments later,
Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn.) cleared the bases with a three-run jack, her second home run of the season, to give the Blue Devils a 4-1 lead.
Starting pitcher
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn.) did herself a favor with some run support in the third inning when she drove in
Kaitlin Stark (Fr, Hastings) with a double to center field. Vanderhoof went on to collect the win, improving her record to 6-0 for the season.
An inning later, Stout added three more runs to push their lead to 8-1. Moss drove in
Sam Stout (Jr, La Crosse) early in the inning, and Sweet picked up her fourth and fifth RBI's of the game later with a single up the middle.
Stout's ninth and final run, which brought into effect the eight-run rule, came in the bottom of the fifth when Moss drove in
Jessica Nicol (Sr, Eau Claire), who singled earlier in the inning.
Moss was 3-for-3 in the game with two runs and two RBI. Sweet, Vanderhoof, and
Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) were all 2-for-3. Vanderhoof allowed three hits and struck out five Macalester batters in five full innings of work on the mound.
In the second part of the doubleheader, the bats remained hot for Stout, if not hotter. The Scots also got some offense going in a game that featured a total of 27 hits and 20 runs.
Mirroring their first inning from game one, Stout got after Macalester pitcher Alisha Barritt early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Moss singled to start the rally, and scored the Blue Devils' first run on a sacrifice fly by
Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn.). Starting pitcher
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn.) helped herself out with an RBI sacrifice bunt, scoring Hastings to push the score to 2-0. Stark drove in two more with a double and
Sam Stout made it a 5-0 lead with an RBI single before the inning's end.
Like they were unable to do in the first game, Macalester put together a comeback in the second contest. The Scots scored three runs in the second inning to cut the deficit to two runs and Miranda Stokes added a solo homer in the third to cut the lead to 5-4.
After a scoreless bottom half of the third for Stout, the Scots grabbed their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth. Abby Cox and Saraswati Wilson both singled and later scored when Anna Munson homered, giving Macalester a 7-5 lead.
From then on, it was all Stout, as they added four runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings while Macalester was done scoring for the night. Hastings highlighted the fourth inning with a home run that drove in Moss, who led off with a single. Gray added a run when Stark singled up the middle and Sweet made the score 9-7 when she scored on a double steal play.
Stark picked up her fourth and final RBI of the game in the sixth inning with a double that scored Sweet. The next batter, pinch-hitter
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn.), made the score final with a three-run homer that scored her sister
Tori Workman and Stark.
Stark finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Moss went 4-for-5 including two runs. Stout's 16 hits are their second-most this season, just two shy of the 18 they put up against Benedictine in Florida. Their run total of 13 is also their second-highest this season, three short of the 16 they scored against St. Olaf, March 8.
Tori Workman went the full seven innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. With the win, she improved her record to 6-4 on the season. For the Scots, Stokes finished the game 4-for-4 while Munson went 3-for-4, and each added a home run.
Stout is scheduled to return to action Thursday, April 4, when they travel to Northwestern College (MN) for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
