Softball home opener with Macalester moved to West St. Paul Dome

Live Stats

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: After a spring break trip that featured five wins in their last six games, Stout will return to the midwest for a doubleheader with Macalester College (8-8), Friday, March. 29. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, but since Alumni Field is covered in snow, the game has been moved to the West St. Paul, Minn., where the games will be played in the West St. Paul Regional Athletics Center, or more commonly refered to as the West St. Paul Dome or West St. Paul Sports Center. The Dome is located at 1655 Livingston Ave, West St Paul, MN. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 5 p.m. Stout will still be the home team in both games. The game will be available on-line in a live stats format.

THE BLUE DEVILS: Stout is off to a 10-4 start and had won five in a row before dropping the final game of their spring break trip. The Blue Devils opened their season by splitting with then fourth-ranked Luther College, dropping the season opener, 9-2, before coming back with a 7-4 win over the Norse at Rochester, Minn. Two days later, Stout swept St. Olaf, 6-3, and 16-3, in five innings. On the day, the Blue pounded out five home runs, including grand slams by Alison Gray and Sam Hastings. Gray had another two-run shot and Hannah Sweet and Erin Moss had home runs. Stout then took their 3-1 record to Clermont, Fla., where they compiled a 7-3 record in 10 games. Although they could not keep up the pace they were on through their first four games, Stout hit the ball well, scoring at least five runs six times and at least eight runs in four games. They are currently averaging over six runs per game through 14 games. Stout's pitching was phenomenal down south, and has been very good all year. Primarily two pitchers have accumulated a team ERA of 1.85, and recorded a 1.08 ERA in the Florida games alone. Only one team in Florida scored more than two runs against Stout and three of Stout's opponents could not produce a single run.

PITCHING STAFF: The Blue Devils have leaned on the pitching arms of Laura Vanderhoof and Tori Workman so far this season. Vanderhoof is 5-0 in her six starts while posting an ERA of 1.53. She has recorded 26 strikeouts in 36+ innings of work. Workman has mowed through more innings, racking up over 50 on the season so far. Her ERA is 1.77 and her record is 5-4. Her K rate is a little lower, striking out 29 batters. Workman has pitched four complete games, three of which came in Florida, while Vanderhoof has gone the distance three times on the season. Each has pitched one shutout. Emily Wegscheid pitched one scoreless inning in Florida and Nicole Rogers saw action against St. Olaf, allowing three runs in two innings.

HITTING THE BALL: For as much as Tori Workman has helped Stout on the mound, she has been equally effective at the plate. Workman is hitting .406 on the season and has collected nine runs and nine RBI in 32 at-bats. Alison Gray is the only other everyday hitter with a better batting average, as she is hitting .442 with a lot of power. Gray has four home runs and three doubles and her 16 RBI match Sam Hastings for the team high. Gray has two multi-home run games this season, and hit a grand slam against St. Olaf. Hastings also has a home run grand slam this season and leads the Blue Devils lineup with four doubles. She has also scored a team-best 15 runs. Lynzi Knudtson hit .440 in Florida to raise her season average to .389, trailing only Workman and Gray. Erin Moss, who has started all 14 games at shortstop, is hitting .370 after a hot start to the season. Moss hit a home run in each of the team's first two doubleheaders to aid their 3-1 start. She leads the team with three triples and seven walks, making her a very reliable leadoff option. Seven other Blue Devils are batting over .300, but only two of them have more than 16 at-bats. Those two are Sam Stout and Taylor Workman, who are batting .345 and .333, respectively.

THE COMPETITION: Macalester College sits at 8-8 on the season and is experiencing the opposite trend that Stout is currently facing. While Stout has won five of their last six, Macalester has lost five of their last six games. Both teams were at the National Training Center games in Clermont, and saw some of the same competition. Stout was 2-1 against their three common opponents while Macalester was 1-2.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Erin Moss was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after the Blue Devils started at a 3-1 overall record.

COACHES: Blue Devil coach Chris Stainer (256-349, overall; 238-324, at UW-Stout) enters her 15th season at Stout and her 16th season overall.

DOWN THE ROAD: While the weather this spring makes any scheduled games tentative, Stout is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Northwestern College (MN), Thursday, Apr. 4, before entering WIAC play against UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Apr. 6.
