CLERMONT, Fla (March 22, 2013) -
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) hit a grand slam home run and little sister
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) pitched a two-hitter as UW-Stout defeated the University of Dubuque, 9-0, on the final day of the Blue Devils' spring break schedule at the National Training Center College Spring Games. Later in the day, the Blue Devils could manage only three hits in a 1-0 loss to Ramapo College.
Taylor Workman entered the game as a pinch hitter with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and sent the pitch into the left field bleachers to give Stout (9-4) a 6-0 lead.
The Blue Devils had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) reached on an infield error, then stole second and came onme on
Sam Hastings' (Jr, Waukesha) single to center field. Hastings came home moments later on
Alison Gray's double down the left field line.
Stout scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Gray singled, then scored on
Tori Workman's single to right fiield. Workman scored on Kaitln Stark's (Fr, Hastings, Minn) first collegiate home run.
While the offense was humming,
Tori Workman was very effective in the circle, but it took her some time to get her bearings. Workman allowed a lead-off single and followed that up with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners, but the Stout defense shut down the play when Moss started a double play by throwing to first and first baseman
Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn) gunned down the runner attempting to score.
Workman allowed only two more runners the rest of the way, a one-out hit in the second and a two-out error in the third. Workman recorded two strikeouts and had the lone first inning walk.
While Stout pounded out nine hits - and timely hits at that - against Dubuque, they could scatter only three hits throughout the game. Stout had hits in the first, third and fifth.
Ramapo scored the only run of the game in the third inning when Jaclyn Lima singled with two outs, then came home on a full count single by Kim LaPenta.
Stout had their opportunities. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings, but could not take advanatage of the chances.
Harley Masiello got the win for Ramapo, striking out two and walking four.
Tori Workman got the hard-luck loss, scattering five hits while striking out two and walking none.
Stout is scheduled to open home play, Friday, March 29, when they are to host Macalester College. Current field conditions and the weather forecast make that game unlikely to happen.
