Blue Devil baseball closes out spring break trip with a split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UW-Stout 13, Knox College 1 | College of Wooster 9, UW-Stout 4

FORT MYERS, Fla (March 22, 2013) - UW-Stout closed out their 2013 spring break trip to the Fort Myers, Fla., area by splitting a pair of baseball games, downing Knox College, 13-1, and falling to the College of Wooster, 9-4, Friday.

Against Knox, the Blue Devils (6-7) gave winning pitcher Andrew Driessen (Sr, Champlin Park, Minn) plenty of support. Driessen went six innings, striking out four and scattering three hits. Driessen returned the favor by not giving up any walks over six innings of work.

The Blue Devil offense took advantage of sporadic pitching by Knox, getting three runs in the both the second and third innings, apiece. Matt Guida (Sr, Hawley, Minn) scored on a wild pitch in the third inning, as did Charlie Pelzer (Jr, LIttle Canada, Minn). Jake Lunow (So, Princeton) drove in a run.

Stout added a run in the sixth and seventh innings each and rolled up four runs in the eighth inning. The 13 runs was Stout's biggest offensive pay day of the season.

Against Wooster, the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Pelzer's two-run single. Wooster chipped away with a run in the third and another in the fourth to tie the game, then took the lead with a three-run fifth inning for a 5-2 advantage.

The Blue Devils added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Lunow scored on an error and Pelzer scored in the seventhon Santiago Morales' (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) single.  The Scots put up two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final 9-4 decision.

Stout returns to the Midwest and will face Macalester College, Wednesday, March 27 at 9:45 p.m. in the Metrodome.
