Stout extends win streak to four with wins over Trinity and Allegheny

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UW-Stout 9, Trinity College 2 | UW-Stout 5, Allegheny College 5

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 21, 2013) - UW-Stout picked up a pair of wins, Thursday, to extend their win streak to four games, their longest of the season. Stout defeated Trinity College, 9-2, before blanking Allegheny College, 5-0.

Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn.), who could only retire one batter against Trinity (6-3), came back with a gem against Allegheny (7-9), pitching a complete game shutout to improve to 5-0 on the season. Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind.) went a combined 5-for-7 on the evening while Lynzi Knudtson (So, Melrose) went 5-for-6. Each of them scored four of Stout's 14 runs on the day.

Against Trinity, Moss went 3-for-4 and scored three runs while Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn.) pitched six-plus innings of shutout ball to help the Blue Devils (9-3) grab their third straight win on their spring break trip.

Moss got the offense going in her first at-bat of the game. She singled to left field and scored two batters later when Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn.) drove her in with a single of her own.

Trinity answered in the bottom part of the inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Lizzy McQuaid and Abby Ostrom scored the first run and Vanderhoof walked the next two batters to load the bases with only one out.

Workman entered the game for Vanderhoof and walked the first batter she faced to score a run. She was able to minimize the damage, however, working out of the jam with only a one-run deficit. Workman officially pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits. She also earned the win to improve to 4-3.

Stout began their comeback in the third inning and did not let up, scoring at least one run in four of the remaining five innings.

Moss and Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) both reached on errors to begin the third inning and both crossed home on a Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn.) single to center, grabbing a 3-2 lead after three.

In the top of the fourth inning, Sam Stout (Jr, La Crosse) scored the Blue Devils' fourth run on a wild pitch and a Moss single drove in Knudtson to put Stout up, 5-3.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Knudtson got the bats going with a single to start off the sixth. Moss followed with a walk and both crossed home on a Hastings double to left field. Hastings then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn.).

Hastings drove in Stout's final run when she scored Tori Workman, who started the inning with a single.

Against Allegheny, the five runs that Stout produced were plenty for Vanderhoof, who mowed through the Gators' lineup all game long.

After a couple hitless innings to start the game, Stout first got on the board with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Knudtson singled and later moved to second on an error to bring up Moss, who drove her in with a single of her own.

Stout held their slim 1-0 margin for the next few innings before they finally put together some runs in the sixth. Again, Knudtson sparked the offense with a single to begin the inning. Moss and Hastings immediately followed with a pair of singles to load the bases for Gray, who drove in all three of them with a triple. Sweet drove in Gray on a sacrifice bunt to make the score final.

Vanderhoof went the full seven innings, allowing no runs and eight hits. She also struck out three batters to help maintain her perfect record on the mound.

Stout will round out their spring break trip tomorrow, March 22, with games against the University of Dubuque and Ramapo College at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (ET), respectively.
