Box Score Johns Hopkins University 4, UW-Stout 1
FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 21, 2013) - After producing 18 runs over their last two games, UW-Stout was only able to muster up a single run, Thursday afternoon, in a 4-1 loss to Johns Hopkins University at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
Stout fell behind in the second inning and could never mount a comeback as they fell to one of DIII's elite baseball programs.
Mitch Lavelle (Fr, Chippewa Falls) and
Kasey Kruse (So, Boyceville) accounted for five of Stout's eight hits in the nine-inning contest.
The Blue Jays (12-2) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, which was extended by a Stout error. Matthew Daum hit a two-out double to score both the runs. Johns Hopkins added another run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Devils (5-6) scored their only run in the sixth inning when
Santiago Morales (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn.) drove in LaVelle, who singled to begin the inning. LaVelle finished the day 3-for-4. Kruse also doubled in the inning, but was left stranded, one of eight Blue Devils left on the basepaths in the game.
The Jays added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth before Thomas Harper picked up the save.
Dan Britts (Sr, Nekoosa) started the game on the mound and picked up the loss after going six and one-third innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks. All three of his runs allowed were unearned, however, as they were all aided by fielding errors. Jacob Enterlin picked up the win for Johns Hopkins, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Stout will close our their spring break trip tomorrow, March 22, with a pair of games against different opponents. They will clash with Knox College at 10 a.m. (ET) before playing The College of Wooster at 1 p.m. (ET).
