THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (9-12, 3-9 WIAC) will host UW-La Crosse (9-12, 3-9 WIAC), Wednesday, Feb. 6, before they head to UW-Eau Claire, where they will look to complete the season sweep of the Blugolds, the only remaining WIAC team who they have not lost to this season. Tip-off against La Crosse is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse, and play in Eau Claire is set to get underway at 5 p.m.
WIAC STANDINGS: With their win on Saturday, Stout moved into a two-way tie for seventh place in the WIAC with La Crosse (3-9), just half a game behind UW-Eau Claire (4-9). With a win over La Crosse on Wednesday and a road victory at Eau Claire on Saturday, Stout would move into sixth place alone, at least half a game ahead of Eau Claire. Stout would then sit in the final qualifying spot for the WIAC Tournament with one remaining week of regular season play.

THE BLUE DEVILS (9-12, 3-9 WIAC): Stout avoided a historic losing streak, Saturday, as they decisively defeated UW-Platteville, 71-57, at Johnson Fieldhouse. After sub-.300 shooting performances in three of their previous five games, Stout shot .417 against Platteville, including 42 percent from three. The Blue Devils used a 27-6 second-half run to grab a 16-point lead that they would keep above 10 for the remainder of the game. Stout won the rebound battle for the first time in four games and had as many assists as they did turnovers for the first time in 17 games (Last time: 11/25/12; 16 ast, 12 TO vs. Martin Luther College). With the positive rebounding margin, Stout improved to 8-1 when they win the battle of the boards, while they are 1-11 with a negative rebounding margin. Furthermore, they improved to 7-2 with a shooting percentage of .400, while they have gone just 2-10 when they shoot under 40 percent...The storyline of Saturday's game was
Sami Schoeder's performance on the heels of a cold streak. In the six games prior to Saturday, Schoeder was 6-of-36 from the field, including 2-of-23 from three. Against Platteville, Schoeder turned it around to shoot 6-of-11, and 4-of-7 from three to lead all players with 18 points...Despite a quiet game against Platteville,
Brea Boomer has consistently delivered production in the scoring category lately. Boomer leads the team in scoring with 11.4 points per game and has scored at least 10 in two of the past three contests. She is also shooting a team- and WIAC-best .515 from the field...
Katelynne Folkers continued her consistent production across the entire stat sheet on Saturday, with eight points, six boards, and four assists. She leads the team in rebounds (5.0 rpg), steals (58) and assists (44), and is second in blocks (8) and scoring (9.4 per game). In the absence of
Whitney Rawdon,
Shelby Sterba's minutes have increased and she has responded well. In the past five games, Sterba has twice recorded nine rebounds and scored a career-high 14 points against River Falls. She tied Folkers with a team-high six boards on Saturday, and has been the team's top rebounder over the past five games, averaging 6.3 per game over that stretch. |

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Sami Schoeder shot 6-of-11 from the field including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc as UW-Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 71-57, Saturday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. Schoeder's 18 points led all players and led the Blue Devils to their first win in seven games. Stout got out to an early lead with three-pointers from
Katelynne Folkers and Schoeder, giving the Blue Devils an 8-2 lead. After Platteville worked the score back to a 9-9 tie, Stout went on a 7-1 run to grab another six-point lead. The Blue Devils were able to build their lead to as much as eight points before half, but a 14-6 Platteville run to close the half knotted the score at 28 at the break. In the second half, it was Platteville who got the hot hand early. They jumped out of the gates with a 5-0 run to take their largest lead of the game just a few minutes into the second half. But from then on, it was all Blue Devils. Over the next 11 minutes, Stout went on a 27-6 run to grab an insurmountable 16-point lead. Schoeder was instrumental in the run, draining three three-pointers, the first of which started the game-sealing run. Over the final six minutes, Stout never led by less than 10 as they ran away from the last-place Pioneers. |

SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE (9-12, 3-9): The Eagles' record matches Stout's exactly, but the teams differ quite a bit. La Crosse has a respectable defense (57.2 points allowed per game) but has really struggled scoring, as they have a conference-worst 56.3 points per game average. Meanwhile, Stout's struggles have come defensively (conference-worst 69 points allowed per game), while they display a respectable scoring offense (65.3 ppg). They are simlar, however, when it comes to free throw shooting and rebounding, each ranking among the WIAC's bottom three teams in both categories. La Crosse has lost their past three games, and have lost six of the past eight. In between the separate three-game skids are wins over UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout, both coming at home. La Crosse has yet to win a conference road game. Briana Radowicz is the team's top scorer and ranks third in the conference in that category. Her 14.6 points per game average, 69 steals, and 62 assists all lead the Eagles. Trisha Van Dusseldorp, who scored 21 points against Stout last time around, adds 10.4 points per game while Erin Levenhagen adds 8.3 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game. | 2012-13 Statistics
UW-LA CROSSE'S LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles dropped their third straight game, Saturday, a 65-57 loss to UW-Stevens Point. The first 18 minutes of the game were very competitive, featuring five ties. With a 21-19 lead with two minutes to play, the Pointers went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead into the break. The Eagles were able to decrease their deficit to two points with 8:13 remaining, then again at 6:47, but could not get any closer as the Pointers used a late 7-0 run to put the game in the books. Stevens Point's Sam Barber and La Crosse's Briana Radowicz each scored a game-high 18 points while Barber also grabbed a game-high nine boards. | Story and Stats
THE SERIES: UW-Stout leads the series, 43-23, overall, but has not shown that dominance recently, losing the last six meetings. La Crosse has won seven of the last 11.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Jan. 16, 2012): A poor shooting night from the field ultimately doomed the UW-Stout women's basketball team, as they shot only 26 percent in the second half and 29 percent overall in a 69-56 loss to UW-La Crosse. The Blue Devils got out to an early lead, but the Eagles went on a 15-0 scoring run to build a comfortable lead mid-way through the half. Late in the half, Stout put together a 7-1 scoring run of their own, cutting the deficit to only two as they trailed 23-25 at the half. Three unanswered points in the first two minutes of the second half once again put the Blue Devils up by one, before La Crosse went on a 14-4 run over a three minute stretch to push the lead back to nine. A 10-0 run by Stout brought the Blue Devils right back into the game, tying the score at 42 with less than 12 minutes to go. Stout would get no closer though, and La Crosse promptly retook the lead and held it for the remainder of the game, going up by as many as 16 on their way to the victory. | Story and Stats
JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 122-34 (.784) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 76-26 (.747) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 90-26 (.779) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (430-255) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. |
UW-La Crosse: Lois Heeren is in her 14th year as the head coach of the Eagles. Two years ago, Heeren led her squad to their first NCAA Tournament since the 1987-88 season, with a record of 20-8. Their conference record of 12-4 was the best in school history and was good enough to get them an at-large bid into the tournament after they placed second. Heeren came to La Crosse after two years as an assistant coach at the United States Air Force Academy. She is a 1984 graduate of Truman State University, where she studied Health, Fitness, and Wellness.
CONFERENCES: Stout and
