THE BLUE DEVILS (8-12, 2-9 WIAC): Stout continued their struggles Wednesday night, in a 25-point loss at UW-Superior. Stout was dominated on the boards (58-37) and again struggled shooting the ball. They shot a season-low 27 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 (.167) from three. Looking on the bright side, they did force Superior into 37 turnovers, the most by any opponent this year. It was also the first time in five games that they won the turnover battle. Stout's shooting percentages and their rebounding margin have been consistent indicators of their success or demise. They are 1-11 with a negative rebounding margin, while they are 7-1 with a positive margin. Furthermore, they are 6-0 if they shoot over 42 percent from the field, but just 2-12 when they do not...Amidst the team's struggles over the past month,
Brea Boomer has consistently delivered production in the scoring category. Boomer has games of 22 and 13 points, and has scored 10 in the past two contests. She has also been one of Stout's top rebounders, and recorded a team-high six against Superior on Wednesday. Boomer is averaging a team-high 11.7 points per game and adds 4.3 rebounds per game. She is also shooting a team- and WIAC-best .518 from the field...
Katelynne Folkers continued her consistent production across the entire stat sheet on Wednesday, leading the team in scoring (11 pts) and rebounding (6 reb). She leads the team in rebounds (5.0 rpg), steals (57) and assists (40), is second in blocks (8) and scoring (9.5 per game). In the absence of
Whitney Rawdon,
Shelby Sterba's minutes have increased and she has responded well. In the past four games, Sterba has twice recorded nine rebounds and scored a career-high 14 points a week ago against River Falls. She has led the team in rebounding over the past five games, averaging 6.4 per game over that stretch |

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout was unable to complete the season sweep of UW-Superior as the Yellowjackets took a 77-52 win Wednesday. The Blue Devils led for only a brief moment at the start of the game as the Yellowjackets took a 37-27 lead into the halftime locker room, then kept the game in double digits the rest of the way. Stout defeated Superior, 79-68, when the teams met in Menomonie in December, but the Yellowjackets have tasted life at the top of the WIAC food chain lately and worked to stay there. Superior had three players in double digits with Kristen Nett leading the way with 16 points. Hillary Peterson had 15 points and Sally Linzmeier finished with 12 points. The Yellowjackets held a distinct advantage off the glass, pulling down 58 boards to Stout's 37. The Blue Devils did force 37 Superior turnovers, making 28 steals. Stout finished with 28 turnovers. |

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE (5-16, 1-11 WIAC): For as ugly as it's been for the Blue Devils lately, it has been perhaps uglier for the Pioneers, who have lost their last nine games and sit alone in the cellar of the conference. Over that nine-game losing streak, Platteville has had a couple close calls, but could not seal the deal in either of them. Against La Crosse on Jan. 3, they missed a game-tying free throw at the end of regulation to fall, 46-45 to the Eagles. Then a week ago, they were nipped by UW-River Falls, 61-60, on Bo Ryan Court. Among the nine WIAC teams, Platteville ranks eighth in scoring offense (57.4) and eighth in scoring defense (63.7), resulting in a conference-worst scoring margin of -6.2. The Pioneers have also been bullied around on the boards and have a rebounding margin of -2.2, which also ranks eighth out of nine. Elizabeth Lawinger leads the team with a scoring average of 11 points per game and scored 22 against Stout the first time around. She also leads the team in assists (72) and steals (49). Alyssa Krajco leads the team in rebounding with 4.6 boards per game and trails only Lawinger with 9.9 points per contest. Kim Wellnitz adds 9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. | 2012-13 Statistics
UW-PLATTEVILLE'S LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers were dominated Wednesday night, falling 79-60 to UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers ran out to a 12-5 lead six minutes into the game and would only pile on the point from there. With three minutes remaining in the first half, Point went on a 9-0 run to grab a 45-25 lead at halftime. Platteville never got closer than 16 points in the second half as they fell to 1-11 in conference play. Alyssa Krajco and McKenzie Forseth each scored a game-high 16 points while Stevens Point's Sam Barber scored 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. | Story and Stats
THE SERIES: Stout leads the series, 42-20. That winning percentage of .677 is Stout's highest against any WIAC opponent. The Blue Devils have won four of the last six, nine of the last 11, and are 12-2 against Platteville in the last 14.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 8, 2012): UW-Platteville took advantage at the free throw line in the second half and went on to defeat UW-Stout, 70-65. The Pioneers made 20-of-26 second half free throws to overcome a 26-23 halftime deficit. Platteville connected on only 1-of-7 first half charity shots. The Blue Devils led through the entire first half and did not give up the lead until five minutes into the second half. The game was tied nine times in the second half until Platteville took the lead with 8:49 left in the game. The Pioneers' Liz Lawinger led all scorers with 22 points. Kaitlyn Pleau came off the bench to add 14 points. Stout got 20 points from Sami Schoeder and 11 points from both Brea Boomer and Katelynne Folkers. | Story and Stats
JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 121-34 (.784) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 75-26 (.747) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 89-26 (.779) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (429-255) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. |
UW-Platteville: Megan Wilson is in her third season as UW-Platteville's head women's basketball coach. Wilson has been accustomed to winning, as her impressive playing career includes two high school state championships and an NCAA national championship. She attended UW-Stevens Point where she captained the 2002 national champion sqaud.
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
CONFERENCES: Stout and
Platteville are both members of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse UW-Oshkosh, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater.
UP NEXT: Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Feb. 5, and then hit the road for games at UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point.
