MENOMONIE (December 11, 2013) - Late turnovers and missed baskets turned a Blue Devil comeback into a definitive River Falls victory as Stout dropped a 67-52 decision at Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
Despite their late-game struggles, Stout's offense got going early, reeling off 11 straight points before the Falcons even got on the board. The Blue Devils would push the lead to 17-2 with just over 14 minutes to go in the half.
River Falls came back slowly over the next eight minutes, cutting the lead to 25-16 with just over six minutes remaining before going on a 10-0 run to take a 26-25 lead into the break.
Stout came out in the second and quickly retook the lead on a
Katelynne Folkers (Jr, Fall Creek) jumper. A steal and layup by
Sami Schoeder (Sr, Durand) followed by an offensive board and putback by
Brea Boomer (Jr, Grand Portage, Minn.) pushed the Blue Devils lead to four, 31-27.Â
Schoeder had 13 points to lead the Blue Devils on 4-10 shooting, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. Boomer added 12 points and nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
The lead would not last though, as River Falls converted a Blue Devil turnover into a Courtney Kanipes three-pointer to pull the Falcons within one.
After an offensive foul against Stout, the Falcons took the lead for good, going up 32-31 on a Hailey Siegle jump shot. Siegle had a game-high 20 points for River Falls on 6-14 shooting, including 3-7 from downtown.
Stout kept it close over the next seven minutes, never falling behind by more than six points in that span. An 11-2 River Falls run with just over eight to go gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game, 51-38.
The Blue Devils refused to go quietly, however. A 13-4 run brought Stout within four points, 51-55, wih two minutes to go. The comeback attempt would be short lived though, as a 12-1 Falcons run would end the game.
Â
Shelby Sterba had 10 points and nine boards, including four on the offensive end while Folkers had a game-high five steals to go along with seven points for Stout.
An off-night from the field contributed to Stout's woes, as the team shot only 27 percent from the field and just 61 percent from the line for the game. The Blue Devils starting five scored 49 of Stout's 52 points on the night.
The Blue Devils will be off until December 31, when they travel to Colorado Springs for the Colorado College Tournament. Stout will face-off against Colorado College on the 31st at 3 p.m. before taking on St. Joseph College-Brooklyn on January 1, 2014 at 1 p.m.
