University of Northwestern, St. Paul 79, UW-Stout 60
ST. PAUL, Minn (November 16, 2013) - UW-Stout fell into a big hole early, then scratched and clawed their way up, but could not quite get out as they lost a 79-60 decision to the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, Saturday at the Eagles' Tip -Off Classic.
The Eagles (2-0) jumped out on the Blue Devils (1-1) early, taking a 10-0 lead after four minutes and building that up to a 20-8 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Stout managed to pull to within four points, but trailed 32-25 at halftime.
A free throw by
Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer) and buckets by
Brea Boomer (Jr, Grand Portage, Minn) and
Katelynn Folkers (Jr, Fall Creek) pulled Stout to within two points, 32-30, a minute into the second half. The Eagles had other ideas and went on a 24-3 run to go up 56-33. Stout got the score below 20 points a couple of times throughout the remainder of the game as Northwestern shot at a 55.6 percent clip after intermission.
The Eagles had four players in double figures, led by Chanel Madsen with 25. Mollie Sir tossed in 18 points, Jessica Fife 14 and Courtney Gunard 12. Fife also had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Boomer led Stout with 11 points and Hebert contributed nine.
Tara Matter (Fr, Spencer) had seven rebounds.
The Eagles made the most of their 3-point attempts, draining 12-of-31. All of Sir's points came from behind the arc. Stout connected on 3-of-8 bombs.
Stout will host Marian University, Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m., then will be at Winona State,Thursday, Nov. 21 and at St. Cloud State, Saturday, Nov. 21.
