THIS WEEK BY THE NUMBERS
.520 Sami Schoeder's three-point percentage over the past three games (13-for-25). First 11 games: 27-52 (.327).
7-0 Stout's record this year with a positive rebound margin.
1-6 Stout's record this year with a negative rebound margin.
.587 Brea Boomer's current shooting percentage, the best in the conference.
THE BLUE DEVILS (8-6, 2-3 WIAC): UW-Stout bucked a few trends on Thursday against Eau Claire, but both resulted in positive outcomes. It was their fourth time in six games that Stout held a halftime lead, but the previous three games ended in losses. On Thursday, they were able to maintain - and extend - their halftime lead to turn it into a win. Furthermore, the win was Stout's first victory in a game they lost the rebounding battle, after losing the first six such games this season. They were able to do so by shutting down the Blugolds' offense, holding them to less than 29 percent from the field for the game. Although it is no longer a perfect indication of success, Stout's rebounding margin has played a huge role in their ability to win games or not. They are 7-0 with a positive margin, and just 1-6 with a negative margin...Although her numbers have slowed down recently, senior Whitney Rawdon continues to lead this young Blue Devils squad. Her season averages of 13.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game each lead the team and both rank among the best in the WIAC. Sami Schoeder has been providing a good chunk of the offense lately after a relatively slow start. In her past three games, Schoeder has scored 16, 17, and, most recently, 19 points against Eau Claire. Over that three-game stretch, she is 13-for-25 (.520) from beyond the arc after starting the first 11 games of the season, 27-of-52 (.327). Schoeder leads the WIAC in three pointers made (2,31).  Brea Boomer, who scored a collegiate-high 22 points in Texas, trails only Rawdon is scoring with 11.7 points per game, and her .587 shooting clip is the best in the conference. After a rough shooting patch in Texas, Katelynne Folkers had a good showing against Eau Claire, going for 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. She leads the team in steals and assists and trails only Rawdon with 5.7 rebounds per game. Six Blue Devils are averaging at least four rebounds per game as they are out-rebounding their opponents, 43-39, on average. | 2012-13 Statistics

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout held UW-Eau Claire to less than 30 percent from the field to defeat the Blugolds for the first time since 2010, a 69-55 win, Thursday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. Winners of the past four meetings between the nearby rivals, UW-Eau Claire could not continue the trend as they shot just 21-of-71 from the field for the contest. Meanwhile, Stout shot 46 percent from the field and used a 14-1 first-half run to give them a lead they held the rest of the night. In her first game with the Blue Devils after joining the team over winter break, Kyleigh Hebert sparked the charge that gave Stout control of the ballgame. A free throw and a jumper from Hebert began a run that turned Stout's early three-point deficit into a 10-point lead with six minutes to go in the first half. Sami Schoeder, who finished with a team-high 19 points, ended the run with back-to-back three pointers. Midway through the half, Schoeder hit two more three pointers in a matter of four Stout possessions to keep Stout's lead a comfortable one, as Eau Claire was putting together a run of their own. Schoeder's fifth and final three of the game gave Stout a 12-point lead with six minutes to play. They were able to extend that lead to as much as 16 as they coasted to an easy victory, only their third win in the teams' last 12 meetings. | Story and Stats

SCOUTING #16 UW-STEVENS POINT (11-3, 3-2 WIAC): Stevens Point nicely worked their way through a difficult schedule to begin their season, and have picked up some steam as they we move into the new year. The Pointer's key win early came in their second game of the year, an 84-63 win against then-first ranked Calvin. They have losses to St. Thomas and Whitewater, both ranked opponents, but won their last game against a top 25 team, an 84-59 rout of then-18th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. That win over IWU began their current six-game win streak. Stevens Point boasts the WIAC's best scoring margin (+15.1) and are beating teams by shooting a high percentage from the field, including from beyond the three-point arc. The Pointers are shooting a conference-best .447 from the field, and have made 37 percent of their threes, also the best rate in the conference. In fact, the only WIAC team who has made more threes than Stevens Point is Stout, although they have attempted 52 more than the Pointers. Sam Barber is far and away the Pointers' best scoring option, averaging 17.9 points per game, which is tops in the WIAC. She is shooting 47 percent from three and is second behind Stout's Sami Schoeder for the most made threes in the conference (2.14). Barber also leads the Pointers in rebounds per game with 6.8, which is fourth best in the conference. Myranda Tyler maintains an average of 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, trailing just Barber in both categories. Tyler also leads the team with 12 blocks. Brooke Allen complements Barber from beyond the three point line, connecting on 18 threes thus far, and the two of them should test Stout's three point defense, which is statistically the worst in the conference. The Pointers are ranked 16th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and are ranked 15th in the latest USA Today Division III Top 25 Coaches' poll. | 2012-13 Statistics

UW-STEVENS POINT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stevens Point was tested by UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, but the Pointers escaped Zorn Arena with a 51-49 win thanks to 18 points off 19 Eau Claire turnovers. The Pointers took a 30-26 lead into halftime, but the Blugolds were able to even the score at 46 with five minutes to play in the game. Buckets by Alyssa Olp and Myranda Tyler gave the Pointers a four-point lead, one they would hold onto in the end. Eau Claire's Sarah Bingea led all players with 16 points, while Tyler had a team-high 13 for Point. Sam Barber scored her 1,000th point as a Pointer with her sixth point of the ballgame. | Story and Stats

THE SERIES: UW-Stevens Point leads the series, 38-28, and has won the past four meetings. They have also won nine of the past 12, including both WIAC Tournament meetings between the teams, in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

LAST TIME THEY MET (Feb. 15, 2012):
UW-Stout got outshot by 10th ranked UW-Stevens Point, but the young Blue Devils kept up the hustle in a 65-44 loss to the Pointers at Johnson Fieldhouse. The first-placed Pointers held Stout scoreless for the first three minutes of the game and without a field goal for the first eight minutes. Cassie Bandow led the Pointers scoring attack early, scoring 12 points as the Pointers held a 25-5 lead at 10:25 of the first half. The Blue Devils did not relent and did cut into the lead, but still trailed, 35-13 at halftime. The Pointers built to as much as a 30 point lead in the second half, but Stout did make the game interesting, forcing 29 Stevens Point turnovers as the Blue Devils recorded 14 steals. Stout was held to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor, while the Pointers finished the night hitting 51.1 percent of their shots. The Pointers' Bandow scored a game-high 15 points, all in the first half. Ashley Averkamp and Taylor Bahr added 11 points. Stout got 11 points from Brea Boomer. | Story and Stats

TRADITION: In 10 of the last 13 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 11 of the last 14 years. Last year broke the trend, however, as they finished second to last in scoring and eight out of nine teams in the conference standings with a final league record of 3-13.

JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 121-33 (.784) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 75-25 (.747) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 89-25 (.779) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (429-251) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. | UW-Stevens Point: Shirley Egner is in her 24th season as head coach of the Pointers and is the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history. She entered the season with a winning percentage of .703, and has averaged 23 wins per season through her first 23 seasons. During the 2001-02 campaign, Egner led her squad to a NCAA DIII National Championship, and finished the season with 30 wins, becoming just the eighth team in DIII history to win 30 games in a season. | UW-Oshkosh: Brad Fischer is in his first season as the head coach of the Titans after coming to Oshkosh from UW-Parkside, where he served as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He is not completely new to the WIAC coaching circuit, however, as he spent three seasons as an assistant at UW-La Crosse, from 2003-06.

THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: Stout, Stevens Point, and Oshkosh are all members of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Superior and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: Stout will remain on the road next week, traveling to UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 16, before heading to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 19 to face the Warhawks for the second time this season.
