THE BLUE DEVILS (8-11, 2-8 WIAC): Hopefully UW-Stout will use their conference bye as an opportunity to get their season headed back in the right direction after losing their fifth straight game, Wednesday, an overtime loss to UW-River Falls. Despite the end result, the Blue Devils showed signs of improvement against the Falcons, leading for almost the entire first half. After a cumulative field goal percentage of .299 over the past four games, Stout shot 20-of-55 (.364) against River Falls. Furthermore, Stout held the Falcons to .328 from the field, the lowest percentage of any opponent since Jan. 3 (UW-Eau Claire, .296). Stout's shooting percentages and their rebounding margin have been consistent indicators of their success or demise. They are 1-10 with a negative rebounding margin, while they are 7-1 with a positive margin. Furthermore, they are 6-0 if they shoot over 42 percent from the field, but just 2-11 when they do not...In the absence of
Whitney Rawdon,
Shelby Sterba has stepped up with some production lately, with her best performance coming on Wednesday against the Falcons. Sterba recorded a career-high 14 points and tied her career high in rebounds (9), which she set two games earlier, against La Crosse. She has led the team in rebounding in the past four games, averaging 7.3 per game over that stretch...
Brea Boomer is averaging a team-high 11.8 points per game and adds 4.2 rebounds per game. She is also shooting a team- and WIAC-best .536 from the field... After she began to hit her stride from beyond the arc at the end of December, into January (13-for-25 (.520) over a three game stretch),
Sami Schoeder has gone 5-for-27 from the field in their past five games, including 2-for-18 from three...
Katelynne Folkers continues her consistent production across the entire stat sheet. She leads the team in rebounds (4.9 rpg), steals (53) and assists (40), is second in blocks (7) and scoring (9.4 per game). |

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout pushed UW-River Falls to overtime, Wednesday night, but a sluggish five minutes of bonus play led to a 73-65 loss at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout committed 10 fouls in the overtime period, allowing River Falls to shoot 18 free throws, of which they made 12. The Blue Devils shot 2-of-9 from the field in the overtime period, which they lost, 14-6. Stout controlled the first half of the game, and held as much as a 14-point lead with five minutes to play in the half. The Falcons sprung a 23-3 run to get back into the game, and from then on, it was back-and-forth. Within the final five minutes of regulation, there were 10 lead changes and seven ties. Stout got the last possession of regulation, but a missed free throw with three seconds remaining sent the game to overtime. Stout never led during the overtime period as they dropped their fifth straight game of the season and their sixth straight to the Falcons. |

SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR (16-4, 8-3 WIAC): The Blue Devils will have their hands full with a UW-Superior team that sits just a game out of first place in the WIAC. Since Stout beat Superior back in December, the Yellowjackets have gone 12-2 while the Blue Devils have gone 3-8. Superior's two losses during that span were to Oshkosh and Stevens Point, two of the top four teams in the WIAC standings. They did, however, defeat conference leader UW-Whitewater, 67-59, earlier this month. The Yellowjackets are 8-0 at home, making them one of three WIAC teams with flawless home records, and are a perfect 3-0 coming off a loss. Superior is one of the league's better three-point shooting teams, as they have made a WIAC-high 98 three pointers and their .346 clip from beyond the arc trails only Stevens Point's .355. Several teams have exploited Superior's defense, which allows 59.8 points per game. In three of their four losses, the Yellowjackets allowed at least 77 points, one of them being Stout's 79 points back in December. More recently, Stevens Point dropped 89 points on Superior on Saturday to move into a tie with the Yellowjackets for third place. Superior's offense has revolved around Sally Linzmeier this season, as she leads the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game. Linzmeier also leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game and is second in the conference with 3.55 steals per game. Connie Urmanski, who led the 'Jackets with 22 points against Stout, maintains a season average of 11.7 points per game. Kristen Nett, who joins only Linzmeier and Urmanski as starters of all 20 games, chips in 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and is Superior's most lethal option from three as she shoots .425 from beyond the arc, the second best percentage in the conference (EC's Teenie Lichtfuss: .462). | 2012-13 Statistics
UW-SUPERIOR'S LAST TIME OUT: UW-Superior's six-game winning streak was snapped Saturday in an 89-78 overtime loss at UW-Stevens Point. Facing an 11-point deficit in the second half, the Pointers rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation, and went on to win the overtime period, 20-9. In a game featuring the WIAC's two leading scorers, Sally Linzmeier and Sam Barber, it was Linzmeier's team that dominated for much of the contest. The 'Jackets relinquished an early seven-point lead to fall behind by one, but built their lead back to six points, 35-29, at halftime. They were able to increase their lead even more after the break, and held an 11-point lead, midway through the second half. But the Pointers battled back, going on a 5-0 run, closely followed by a 7-0 run to pull within two points with four minutes to play. Superior's Connie Urmanski hit a last-second three to send the game into bonus time, in which the Pointers dominated for an 11-point victory. | Complete Game Story
THE SERIES: Stout leads the series, 48-30. The Blue Devils have won four of the last six, nine of the last 11, and are 25-2 against Superior since 2000.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 15, 2012): Seniors Kayla Windt and Whitney Rawdon combined for 17 points in the final five minutes to hold off a surging UW-Superior squad, and leave their home court with a 79-68 win, Wednesday night. In the final five minutes, the Blue Devils scored four points from the field and 15 from the charity stripe. Windt scored 11 of her 14 points during that stretch while Rawdon scored six of her team-high 17. Stout jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after forcing four Yellowjacket turnovers in the first five minutes. Superior stormed back, however, and tied the game at 11-all. Connie Urmanski, who finished with a game-high 22 points, added two free throws to give her team their first lead of the night midway through the first half. Stout turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 46-27 margin five minutes into the second half. Brea Boomer scored eight of her 11 points to help spark the early second-half charge. In the three minutes leading up to halftime and the five minutes following it, Stout outscored Superior, 25-6, to build a 19-point lead, their largest of the night. The Yellowjackets would not go away. In fact, they quickly began erasing their deficit. Superior was scoring just as often as Stout was turning the ball over and five minutes later, Stout's lead had gone from 19 to two. Haley Froehlich, who ended with a career-high 12 points, put an end to Superior's 19-2 run with a three-pointer at 9:43. She added another jumper two minutes later, and a pair of free throws at the seven-minute mark, and Stout led by nine. From then on, it was the Rawdon and Windt show to hold on for the win. The two accounted for 20 of Stout's last 22 points, a combined 13-of-14 from the line and 3-of-3 from the field during that stretch. | Story and Stats
TRADITION: In 10 of the last 13 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 11 of the last 14 years. Last year broke the trend, however, as they finished second to last in scoring and eight out of nine teams in the conference standings with a final league record of 3-13.
JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 121-34 (.784) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 75-26 (.747) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 89-26 (.779) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (429-254) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. |
UW-Superior: Don Mulhern, Ph.d, is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Yellowjackets and in his 25th season as a college basketball coach. After struggling in previous years, Mulhern turned his squad in the right direction, coaching them to their best season since he took over. They ended the 2011-12 season with 12 wins and qualified for the WIAC Tournament for the first time since 2004. Mulhern is currently on the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee.
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
CONFERENCES: Stout and
Superior are both members of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater.
