THE BLUE DEVILS (15-4, 7-3 WIAC): UW-Stout got a predictable win against Ashford University on Saturday, stifling their NAIA opponent for just 35 points, just 13 of them coming in the first half. It was a very typical win for Stout, as they dominated defensively, rebounded well (40-20), and
Erik Olson directed an efficient offensive performance (11 assists). Looking forward, Stout has six regular season games remaining, all conference matchups, with four of them coming at home. Stout was 5-1 against those six opponents, combined, in their first meetings this season. The only loss was at UW-Stevens Point, who will visit Johnson Fieldhouse, Wednesday, Feb. 13. Stout's already-impressive defensive numbers got even better after their smothering of Ashford. The Blue Devils rank inside the top three in the nation in scoring defense (53.8 ppg) and field goal percentage allowed (.361). Stout also boasts a conference-best rebounding margin of +8.2, 15th best in all of DIII.
Erik Olson and
Chris Hortman have been running the show in January, and Saturday against Ashford was no different. Olson had 11 assists while Hortman led all players with 24 points and eight rebounds, the 24 points being his highest total as a Blue Devil. Olson's assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.76 is the best in the nation among DIII programs. Olson has dished out at least seven assists in his past five games and has one or zero turnovers in four of the past six. His average of 6.53 assists per game ranks him inside the top five in all of DIII...Hortman has led the team in scoring in all seven games in January, and led them in rebounds all but once. During this month, Hortman has recorded two double-doubles and is averaging 18.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, the highest on the team in either category over that stretch. Last week alone, Hortman averaged 23 points and 7.5 boards in Stout's two contests. His scoring average is up to 13.3 points per game, which is the second-highest on the team, and he has passed
Josh Kosloske for the team lead in rebounding (6.1 rpg).
Alex Oman leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game and is first on the team in steals. In addition to being the team's second leading rebounder, Kosloske is shooting a team-best .641 from the field.
Jarvis Ragland ranks third in scoring with an average of 10.2 points per game, while
Aaron Jenny is averaging 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. |
2012-13 Statistics
A PLACE IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists all year, and the inevitable happened against Superior on Dec. 5, as Olson passed Jeremy Leibfried's record total of 358, making him the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson broke the record with his third assist of the game, and currently has 436.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stout had no trouble with non-conference opponent Ashford University, as they dominated the Saints from start to finish for a 60-35 win, Saturday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Chris Hortman scored 24 points to continue his hot scoring streak and
Erik Olson tied his career high with 11 assists as the Blue Devils led the entire game.
Alex Oman's three-pointer to start the game started a 7-0 run that set the tone for the night. Ashford got their first bucket more than six minutes into the game, but Stout pushed their lead to 12-2, midway through the half on another Oman three-pointer. The Saints made only one of their first 12 shots as they fell into the double-digit deficit. Ashford worked their deficit back to five points with three and half minutes to play in the first half, but an 11-4 Stout run to end the half gave the Blue Devils a commanding 25-13 lead at the break. Oman led all scorers at halftime with nine points, while Hortman scored eight. The second half was hardly different from the first, as Stout opened on a 9-2 run to virtually seal the victory. Following that run, Stout never led by less than 17. |

SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR (8-12, 4-7 WIAC): If the saying "defense wins championships" is true, UW-Superior is going nowhere. Through 20 games, they have allowed a conference-worst 73.6 points per game and have allowed at least 80 points on six occasions and at least 90 points four times. They also struggle in the rebounding category, and currently have a rebounding margin of -1.6. Superior has lost three of the past four, allowing an average of 78 points during that stretch. Prior to that four-game stretch, however, the Yellowjackets had won four out of five, including a surprising 69-66 win over UW-Whitewater. Jarrod Peterson has been the anchor of the 'Jackets' offense, averaging 15.4 points per game, which is the second best average in the WIAC. Peterson is trigger-happy from beyond the arc, as he should be, boasting a .395 clip from three. Peterson averages 5.4 rebounds per game and leads the team with 22 steals. Brendan Bauer and Bronson Byrne, the two Yellowjackets to start all 20 games, both average about 10 points and five rebounds per game, with Bauer's 5.5 rebound per game average leading the squad. Byrne, standing seven feet tall, has 43 blocks on the season, 13 more than the second highest total in the WIAC. Johnquez Brooks runs the offense from the point guard position, averaging 3.75 assists per game, and is a viable option from three, shooting .360 (18-of-50).
UW-SUPERIOR'S LAST TIME OUT: The Yellowjackets were absolutely dominated by UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, as the Pointers improved to 11-0 in conference play. Stevens Point shot 56 percent from the field, including 10-of-19 from three point range. After Superior knotted the score at five apiece, the Pointers went on an 8-0 run to give them their first sizeable lead, one they would not relinquish. Point stretched their lead to 16 by halftime, and increased it to as much as 29 in the second half of a game that was hardly competitive. Four Pointers scored in double digits, led by 20 points from Jordan Giordana, who shot 6-of-8 from the field, 4-of-6 from three. Brendan Bauer led Superior with 16 points and five rebounds. |
Story and Stats
THE SERIES: Stout leads the series, 115-101. Superior has won four of the past five meetings, but each team has won five of the past 10.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 5): Point guard
Erik Olson's all-time Stout assists record overshadowed Stout's 69-54 victory over UW-Superior earlier this season. Olson, who finished with 6 assists on the night, passed Jeremy Liebfried to become Stout's all-time assists leader, a record he continues to increase each game. Stout led nearly the whole game, after four lead changes in the first two minutes. Superior kept it close initially, but with the score tied 9-9 about four minutes in, Stout would go on a 12-2 run that put them up for good. Superior was able to put together a run late in the half, but the Blue Devils held off the charge, never letting them closer than five points. At the half the score was 32-21, Stout. Turnovers would prove to play a huge role in the game, as Stout was able to force the Yellow Jackets into 15, including 10 steals. The Blue Devils turned the ball over only six times in comparision. The Blue Devils also outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 39-33 overall and 12-6 on the offensive end. |

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE (14-6, 7-4 WIAC): Updates coming Thursday
UW-PLATTEVILLE'S LAST TIME OUT: Updates coming Thursday
THE SERIES: Platteville leads the series, 76-47. The Pioneers have won 10 of the past 13 and are 4-2 in the past six meetings.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 8): Aaron Jenny and
Alex Oman provided a one-two punch in the first half to give UW-Stout a lead they would not relinquish on their way to a 64-55 win at UW-Platteville Saturday. Both Jenny and Oman tallied 11 points in the first half, but they tag-teamed the effort. Jenny almost single-handedly erased a 10-point first half Platteville lead as he scored seven points with a pair of lay-ups and a three-pointer to pull Stout to within two points at 13:37. Jenny scored his 11 points of the first half in the first 12 minutes of the game, but most of them came in a nine minute outburst. When Jenny's run was over, Oman took over, scoring his first points of the game with around eight minutes left in the first half and went on to score his 11 first half points with a pair of three-pointers, a layup and three free throws. Oman would go on to continue his run throughout the game, finishing with a game-high 23 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor, 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-of-8 from the line. Jenny would toss in only one more bucket in the second half, but finished shooting a very efficient 6-of-7 from the floor. The Blue Devils held a 27-25 halftime lead and only once let the Pioneers get as close as three points in the second half, holding as much as a 14 point lead when Oman banked in a three-pointer with three minutes left on the clock. |
