THE BLUE DEVILS (8-10, 2-7 WIAC): Stout has hit a bit of an icy patch in the road recently, losing their last four games, their longest skid of the season. The Blue Devils began their skid with a 31-point loss to Stevens Point in which they allowed a season-high 88 points. They followed that up with a 29.2 percent shooting effort against Oshkosh, which was their worst field goal percentage of the season until four days later when they shot 29.1 percent from the field against La Crosse. And most recently, Stout took a 39-point beating from Whitewater, who absolutely steamrolled the Blue Devils all game long on Saturday. During the losing streak, Stout is shooting under 30 percent from the field, more than a .100 drop from their .400 clip in their first 14 games. What has taken even more of hit is their three-point percentage, which dropped from .305 over the first 14 games to .154 over the last four. Three of those four games were on the road, so they hope Johnson Fieldhouse will be the place they can turn the season back around. Stout's shooting percentages and their rebounding margin have been consistent indicators of their success or demise. They are 1-9 with a negative rebounding margin, while they are 7-1 with a positive margin. Furthermore, they are 6-0 if they shoot over 42 percent from the field, but just 2-10 when they do not...
Brea Boomer continues to play well and has now led the team in scoring in four of the past six games. Boomer scored a career-high 22 in two of those games, but both resulted in losses. On the season, Boomer is averaging 11.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, and is shooting a team- and WIAC-best .544 from the field.
Sami Schoeder continues to keep us guessing. After she began to hit her stride at the end of December, into January, she has gone 3-for-19 from the field in their past four games, including 1-for-12 from three.
Katelynne Folkers continues her consistent production across the entire stat sheet. She leads the team in rebounds (5.0 rpg), steals (51) and assists (39), is second in blocks (6) and scoring (9.3 per game). |
2012-13 Statistics
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils' struggles continued, Saturday evening, as they lost their fourth straight game, an 86-47 loss to UW-Whitewater at Kachel Gymnasium. The Warhawks laid on the points rapidly and consistently in a game that was a blowout before ten minutes came off the clock. Whitewater had a 29-7 lead midway through the first half and never looked back as they steamrolled the Blue Devils from start to finish. Four minutes into the game, Whitewater was out to a 13-2 lead. Ten minutes later, their lead was up to 33, and they extended it to as much as 35 before Stout cut it back to 52-19 at halftime. The second half was much of the same for both teams. Stout improved their shooting percentage from 27 to 30 while Whitewater's dropped from 57 to 55. The Warhawks built their lead to as much as 45 on two separate occasions, and led by more than 30 for the entire half. Five Warhawks scored in double digits, with Mary Merg leading the group with 13 points.
Katelynne Folkers led the Blue Devils with 10 points and
Shelby Sterba led the team with five rebounds. |

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS (9-9, 3-6 WIAC): The Falcons rank middle of the pack in most major statistical categories. The one exception to that is their rebounding margin, which is a WIAC-best +8.0. Much credit is due to Brittany Gregorich, who leads the conference with 10.8 rebounds per game. She is the only player in the WIAC to average a double-double, coupling her league-best rebounding average with 12.5 points per game. She has six double-doubles to date, which leads the league, and twice more recorded over ten rebounds. She has games with 18 and 19 boards, the latter of which she paired with 23 points, against St. Mary's (IN). One dimension River Falls lacks is the deep ball. They are one of the worst teams in all of DIII from beyond the arc, shooting just 21.2 percent. They do not defend the three very well, either, allowing their opponents to shoot over a .300 clip. The only team that ranks behind them in three-point field goal defense is Stout (.336). Tess Lueders is the Falcons' best scoring threat, averaging 13.6 points per game. | 2012-13 Statistics
UW-RIVER FALLS' LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stevens Point's sharpshooting was too much for River Falls to handle, Saturday, as they fell, 63-43, to the Pointers, their third loss in as many games. Stevens Point shot 44 percent for the game, including a 54 percent clip in the second half, while the Falcons shot just 30 percent for the night. Point's Sam Barber shot 5-of-10 while River Falls' Tess Lueders shot 6-of-15, both scoring a game-high 14 points. Barber added 11 boards for a double-double. | Story and Stats
THE SERIES: River Falls leads the series, 42-38. The Falcons have taken the last five matchups, but Stout holds a 10-6 edge in the past 16 meetings. There is also some recent playoff history between the two clubs, having met twice in the WIAC Tournament in the past six seasons. Stout took both meetings, in 2007 and 2010.
EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 12, 2012): UW-Stout held a small, but consistent lead throughout the first 27 minutes of the game, but could not hold off UW-River Falls in the second half and the Falcons took a 72-61 win at Karges Center. Led by Whitney Rawdon's 12 first half points, Stout held a 31-28 halftime lead. Rawdon would add five more points in the first seven minutes of the second half, but then was kept quiet as River Falls took a 42-41 lead on a Hailey Siegle layup with 13 minutes left, and the Falcons never trailed again. Rawdon finished with a game-high 22 points, matching a career high, hitting 7-of-12 from the floor, and had a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. Katelynne Folkers added 11 points for the Blue Devils and had seven rebounds. | Story and Stats
TRADITION: In 10 of the last 13 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 11 of the last 14 years. Last year broke the trend, however, as they finished second to last in scoring and eight out of nine teams in the conference standings with a final league record of 3-13.
JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 121-33 (.784) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 75-25 (.747) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 89-25 (.779) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (429-253) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. |
UW-River Falls: Cindy Holbrook is in her 13th season as the head coach of the Falcons. Last year, Holbrook led River Falls to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1994-95 season, and, at 21-7, their most wins since the 1988-89 season when they had 23. Holbrook spent her collegiate playing career at UW-Stout, where she occupies the record books as Cindy Hovet. She is among Stout's greatest in many categories and holds the record for most points in a game (39). She was inducted into the Stout Hall of Fame in 2005.
CONFERENCES: Stout and
River Falls are both members of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater.
UP NEXT: Stout returns home, Wednesday, Jan. 23, to host UW-River Falls in the first of three home games over a four-game stretch.
