MENOMONIE, Wis. (May 4, 2012) - After losing the first game of the day, 15-5, Stout lost the second contest, 7-4, both at the hands of UW-La Crosse, Friday evening at Nelson Field.
The Eagles (29-9, 20-2 WIAC) got the bats going early, and kept them hot all game long. They started the scoring in the top of the second inning as they scored four runs on four hits. The Blue Devils (17-21, 6-16 WIAC) answered immediately with a two-run inning, although both runs were unearned.
After a two-run top half from the Eagles, Stout tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn.) hit a solo homer to lead off the inning.
Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn.) followed with a single and
Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) added a double.
Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) drove in Guida to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
The hits kept coming for La Crosse as they added two in the fourth and one in the fifth, making it a 9-4 contest.
AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn.) hit a solo homer in the sixth, but that was the closest Stout could get before La Crosse ended the game early with a six-run seventh inning.
Three Eagle batters each had three hits while another three had two. As a team, La Crosse out-hit the Blue Devils 18-7.
Tyler Hamann (Jr, Marathon) got the start for Stout, going three and a third, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits, while striking out four. Tim Verthein got the win for the Eagles, pitching six inning, allowing seven hits.
In the second game, Stout got the scoring going first, and led deep into the game.
Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn.) drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. In the fourth,
Colin Pechacek (Fr, River Falls) drove in Schoch with a single to left field. In the bottom of the sixth, Schoch drove in Guida and Gangestad on a double to left, putting the Blue Devils up, 4-1.
It all fell apart, however, in the top of the seventh, when La Crosse went on a tear. The Eagles scored five runs on six hits, dismantling starting pitcher
Dan Britts (Jr, Nekoosa) and reliever
John Ewald (So, Maplewood, Minn.). Ewald was saddled for three earned runs without recording an out in the inning, and was later saddled with the loss. Duske was taken from second base to come in and finish the game on the mound. He allowed one run and five hits in his two and two-thirds innings of work, but the offense could not recover after the big inning by the Eagles.
Gangestad was 4-for-9 on the day while Schoch went 4-for-7. Zach Lauersdorf picked up the win in his relief effort, going four innings, allowing just two hits and two walks.
Stout will get another crack at the Eagles tomorrow, as the teams are scheduled for another doubleheader, starting at noon.
