MENOMONIE (April 3, 2012) - UW-Stout swept a pair of games over Northwestern College, using the 8-run rule in both as the Blue Devils took 9-1, 10-2 wins Tuesday at Alumni Field.
In the opener,
Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) scattered five hits and allowed one run as Stout crashed the scoreboard after the second inning. Trailing 1-0, Stout tallied five runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game.
In the five run third,
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) cracked a bases loaded triple to drive in three runs, then came in on an outfield error on the play. Earlier in the inning,
Jessica Nicol (Jr, Eau Claire) drove in
Sammy Peterson (Sr, Hudson) on a groundout.
Nicol plated Stout's run in the fourth inning when she executed the suicide squeeze, scoring Vanderhoof on the play to give Stout (10-10) a 6-1 lead.
The Blue Devil ended the game with three runs in the fifth.
Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn) opened the inning with a single, then moved to third when Gray's single was misplayed, putting Gray at second. Richardson scored on a wild pitch and Gray moved to third. Gray stole home after
Hannah Sweet (So, Elk River, Minn) walked. Sweet eventually advanced to third, then was thrown out when Vanderhoof put down a bunt with no outs. Vanderhoof made it safely to first on the fielder's choice and, while advancing to second, came all the way around home after the ball was thrown into the outfield to score the game ending run.
Vanderhoof settled down after the second inning and allowed five hits - only one after the second inning - struck out five, while walking one.
In the nightcap, pitcher
Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) was nearly untouchable over the first four innings. One Northwestern (6-12) runner reached safely in the first on an error, but Kimberly shut the door on the other 12 runners. At one point, she tossed six consecutive strikeouts, then followed that up with three consecutive fly outs to Nicol in left feld.
In the meantime, Stout had jumped out a 5-0 lead after three innings, getting a pair of runs in the first and three in the third. Stout added another run in the fourth.
The Eagles broke the no-hitter with a lead off single in the fifth, then tallied two runs in the sixth to break up the shutout.
Stout ended the game in the sixth with three runs, two on Sweet's two-run home run to centerfield. Nicol doubled, then came home on Peterson's double to end the game.
Kimberly finished with 10 strikeouts, scattered five hits, allowed the two earned runs and walked none.
Stout will host UW-Platteville, Friday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
