Baseball team splits with Viterbo

LA CROSSE (April 29, 2012) - UW-Stout and Viterbo University each had the same number of hits in both games as the two teams split a pair of non-conference contests Sunday, with Stout winning the first, 7-4, and Viterbo taking the second, 8-6..

Stout (17-19) had 10 hits in each game, while the V-Hawks (10-31) recorded eight hits in each contest. Brett Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls) had a solid couple of games at the plate, hitting a combined 5-for-7 with three RBI.

Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) was 3-for-4 in the first game with four RBI, including a two-run double in the second and a two-run home run in the sixth. Vavra was 3-for-3.

Stout scored three runs in the second inning, then made it a 5-0 lead with two runs in the fifth. Viterbo scored two in the bottom of the inning, but Stout negated that with two more runs in the sixth inning. The V-Hawks closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Cory Hedeen (Sr, Cannon Falls, Minn) pitched 6.1 innings to record the win, scattering eight hits and striking out two.

The V-Hawks struck first in the second game, getting single runs in both the first and second innings and took a 5-0 lead with three runs in the third.

Stout answered with their own three-run onslaught in the fourth inning. AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) drove in a run and Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) plated two runs with a single.

But the V-Hawks added three more runs in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. Vavra hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, but that would be the end of the scoring for the day.

Stout will close out the season when they host UW-La Crosse, Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.
