MENOMONIE (April 25, 2012) - In a pair of wild games that saw both teams mount comebacks - some big, some little - UW-Stout and UW-Superior split a conference doubleheader Wednesday at Nelson Field, with the Yellowjackets winning the first, 12-10, but Stout coming back to win the second, 8-7.

Stout (16-18, 6-14 WIAC) built a commanding 7-1 lead in the first game, scoring six runs in the fifth inning, only to see the Yellowjackets (17-14, 8-8 WIAC) score seven runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead.

The Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Santiago Morales (West St. Paul, Minn) driving in two runs with a double to highlight the inning and give Stout a 10-8 lead.

The Yellowjackets cut into the lead in the eighth inning, scoring a run on a bases-loaded double play, then came back to win the contest with three runs in the ninth, the final two runs coming on Jeff Miller's double into right field.

Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) was 3-for-6 for Stout and Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn), Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) and Brett Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls) each had two hits. Wyatt Soderquist and Jeff Miller each were 3-for-6, with Soderquist recording four RBI.

In the second contest, Vavra hit a walk-off double to score Schoch, who had reached on a two-out error. Schoch had advanced to second base when AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) drew a walk. Vavra cracked the pitch to left center for the win.

This was another up and down affair. Stout took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBIs by Schoch and Vavra. The Yellowjackets cut the lead in half on Casey Dittel's RBI single, then took a 4-2 lead with a three-run third inning.

Stout tied the lead in the bottom of the inning when a Schoch groundout plated Gangestad and Yusten brought home Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn) with a single up the middle.

Superior scored one in the seventh, then took the lead with a two-run eighth.

Morales tied the game with a lead-off home run in the ninth, setting the stage for Vavra's winning double.

Adam Widder (Fr, Wauwatosa) picked up his second win of the season, allowing no hits or runs in 1.1 innings of play. Dan Britts (Jr, Nekoosa) started for the Blue Devils, striking out five, but got the no decision.

Morales, Schoch and Vavra each had two hits for Stout, Rob Veith, Tony Remund, TJ Evanson and Shaun Marshall each had two hits for the Yellowjackets.

Stout will be at Viterbo University, Sunday, April 29, then will close out the season by hosting UW-La Crosse, Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.
