OSHKOSH (April 22, 2012) - UW-Oshkosh took advantage of four UW-Stout errors to take an 8-3 first game win Sunday, then took advantage of getting their lead off batters on base six of eight times to take a 10-3 second game win and complete a four-game sweep over the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils (15-17, 5-13 WIAC) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when
Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) and
Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Both advanced a base on a failed pickoff play that went into the outfield. Duske scored from third on
Ryan Gangestad's (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) groundout and Morales scored on
Matt Guida's (Jr, Hawley, Minn) groundout.
Tyler Hamann (Jr, Marathon) became the victim of four Stout errors, allowing four runs over 6.2 innings, but no earned runs. The Titans scored twice in the fourth to knot the game at 2-2, then added single runs fifth and sixth innings.
Stout pulled to within 4-3 when
AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) led off the seventh inning with a home run to right field.
The Titans (13-16, 9-9 WIAC) added four runs in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Tyler Kamps and a two-run double by Alex Mullendore for the final 8-4 score. Stout loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but a double play ended the game.
Stout held the initial lead in the second game, as Morales led off the game with a single, took a couple of bases on a failed pickoff play and came home on Guida's single centerfield.
The Titans score in the bottom of the first, then added two runs in the bottom of the third on a Mullendore single.
Oshkosh took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but Stout pulled to within one run, 4-3, in the top of the sixth when
Charlie Meyer (Fr, Janesville) and
Brett Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls) each drove in a run.
The Titans answered back with three in the sixth for a 7-3 lead. Stout stranded a runner at third in the seventh and Oshkosh wrapped up the scoring with a single run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
Guida and Vavra were both 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils. Brock Guetzke was 3-for-4 for the Titans and Doug Beattie was 3-for-5. Mullendore was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 25 at 1 p.m., then will be at Viterbo University, Sunday, April 29.
